About an hour into my hanging around the tearoom at a table by the fire, the bell above the door tinkled and the detective inspectors walked in. My stomach fluttered, and I felt torn between excitement at seeing the handsome DI Prescott and nerves over what their presence meant. Calvin finished taking the orders of two young women, then walked to the front to greet the officers.
DI OâBrien scanned the room, his dark, intelligent eyes narrowed as if everything, from the fireplace to the way Calvinâs cravat was tied, made him suspicious.
âHello, Detectives.â Calvin kept his voice low, then glanced behind him. The dining room was disappointingly only about a third full. At this time of the afternoon, when the British loved to take their tea, the cafe shouldâve been hopping. And having a couple of detectives poking about wasnât going to help business any.
DI OâBrien fixed Calvin with a steely glare. âIs your boss around?â
âYes. Heâs working in the kitchen, sir.â
âShow us back there.â
Calvin nodded, and they threaded through the dining room toward the kitchen. The young, good-looking DI Prescott did a double take when he passed my table, then walked closer. âMiss Wells, right?â
I grinned and wrapped my hands around my warm cup of Earl Grey. âMinnieâs fine.â
His lopsided grin widened. âGood to see you, Minnie.â He frowned and shook his head. âI mean... not under the circumstances of the murder of course.â He scratched the back of his neck and looked adorably flustered. âHow are you holding up?â
I glanced around at the few customers scattered about, then lowered my voice. âIâm fine, thank you. I was a little rattled at first, but Iâm better now.â
He nodded. âIâve been working homicides for three years but am still not totally used to all that death.â
I grinned. That was pretty cute that heâd admitted that to me. âWhat brings you by today?â I glanced at Calvin, who waited with the impatient-looking DI OâBrien by the door to the kitchen.
DI Prescott licked his full lips. âUh, just a routine check on some paperwork.â
I raised my brows. âFor the cafe?â
He shook his head. âFor one of the employees here.â
âPrescott!â
We both turned to look at DI OâBrien, who raised his bushy brows and jerked his head toward the kitchen.
The young detective turned back to me and winked. âDuty calls. Good to see you, Minnie. I said that already.â He shook his head and muttered to himself as he rejoined his partner and Calvin, and they all disappeared into the kitchen.
I grinned after them. DI Prescott was adorable and seemed to always make me smile. I frowned as I took a sip of my tea. Whose paperwork were they here after, and what did that have to do with Brockâs murder?
A moment later, Calvin peeked out of the kitchen and waved Dominik over. They exchanged a few words, and the hulk of a butler paled, then followed Calvin back into the kitchen. Was it Dominik, then? And did the police want to see his
