Danny left, feeling very frustrated. There was nothing he could say to Netta to make her quit breaking into other peopleâs houses. She was stubborn and wouldnât listen to anyone.
He understood that she was upset about the article and that someone had broken into her suite to leave the rope. But egads! She was only making things worse.
Now, instead of just suspecting that she was involved in the investigation, at least one person knew without question that she was determined to figure out who killed Gwen.
Maybe Justine was right and he should put Netta in a cell. It would be the only way to keep her out of trouble. No. Sheâd find a way to sneak out.
Then, he would have to arrest her for both a burglary and a jail break.
Needless to say, Danny slept fitfully that night. The next morning, he contacted the red-haired woman that Netta had overheard talking about Curtis Mark breaking into Gwenâs house.
âHello, Detective,â she said, the shock evident on her face when he knocked on her door. She didnât ask why he was there. She obviously knew.
âPlease come in. Can I get you some coffee?â she asked.
âNo, thank you. I was following up on a tip. It has come to my attention that you saw Curtis Mark breaking into Gwenâs place the night that she was murdered,â Danny asked.
She heaved a heavy sigh.
âI did. I think it was about nine or ten at night. He knocked loudly on her door, which was why I knew he was there. Then, when she didnât answer, he rattled the knob and took out something shiny, and a minute later, he was inside.â
âDo you know how long he was in there?â Danny asked, knowing full well that she did. She was the type of woman who minded everyoneâs business.
âAbout fifteen or twenty minutes. Alex Trebek was coming on, and he hadnât gone off yet when Curtis left,â Red answered.
âWas he carrying anything when he left?â Danny asked.
âHe had a pillowcase full of stuff,â Red said.
âWhy didnât you come to the police right away with this information?â he asked.
Her face turned so red that it almost matched her hair.
âI was waiting for a reward to be offered,â she said, clearly embarrassed by her behavior.
Danny just shook his head. He recorded her name and number in his phone, and handed her his card.
âThank you for your time, Maâam. Please call me if you think of anything else,â he said.
He went back to his office and made notes about the conversation. He was about to call Curtis to ask him to come in when Sander burst through office doors.
âI demand to know what is happening with the investigation into Gwenâs death,â Sander said loudly.
The receptionist stuck her head around the doorjamb with a harried look on her face.
âI tried to stop him, Sir, but he pushed right past me,â she said.
âDid he put his hands on you?â Danny asked.
âNo, he just brushed by me,â she said, knowing that Danny would lose his temper if he thought that someone actually pushed her.
