Nineteen

At the end of the day, Danny found himself wandering over to Netta’s inn without even thinking about it. He wasn’t sure what he was going to say to her, although the idea of asking her out for dinner still bounced around his brain, even if his good sense told him to wait until the case was resolved.

He was honest enough to admit that he just wanted to see her.

His phone started vibrating in his pocket as he stepped onto the inn’s porch. He groaned when he saw that it was from the police department.

“Detective Sussex,” he answered.

“Hey, this is Ken from dispatch. I have a call that I think you should take, it might be related to your case.”

“Okay, forward it, please,” Danny said.

“Detective Sussex,” he answered.

“Hello, Detective. This is Lieutenant Jennifer Bradshaw of the United States Coast Guard,” came a soft voice. “We were patrolling the area when we found a boat that appeared to drift aimlessly. There were two deceased persons on board that died a couple of hours before our arrival.

“Our medic, who has trained in chemical weaponry, said that the victims looked like they had been exposed to ricin gas via an aerosol can.

“I wanted to clue you in because we heard that you’re working a case with a similar cause of death.”

“Thank you. There has to be a connection because that would be too much of a coincidence. Can you have your investigators contact me if they get any new information? I will do the same on my end,” Danny said.

“Absolutely. We need to get this thing cleared up before other people die,” she said, and hung up.

Danny decided to let Netta know the latest development in hopes that if he told her the bad guys were upping their game, she might back away. He doubted it, but he had to take the chance. He didn’t want anything bad to happen to her.

He stepped inside the inn.

Netta was shocked at his news.

“I wonder if those were the same guys I saw last night,” she said.

“They probably were. You must step back from this, Netta. They are dangerous. Chances are excellent they aren’t small-time thugs. They have access to weapons of mass destruction and appear to have no problems dispensing with people who get in their way.”

“I’m not backing down but I’m not putting myself out there either. No one knows that I’ve been helping you,” Netta repeated.

Danny growled, frustrated with her stubbornness. He opened his mouth to argue when his phone rang again.

“There is a cell phone under the cabana where Kevin’s body was found. You might want to check it out,” a muffled voice said. Then the caller hung up.

Danny stared at his phone. Then he called the station, and arranged for two uniforms to meet him at Maven’s cabana.

He told Netta to stay where she was, so naturally, she followed him to his car to grab evidence collection equipment, then over to Maven’s shop.

As they approached, the elder witch hurried outside, curls rioting all over her head.
