Chapter Ten

The phone rang loudly enough to shock Cassie out of what she was doing.

"Hello?"

"It's Zack. We got a hit."

"On the John Doe?" Her heart skipped a beat the same way it always did when there was a chance of discovering the truth. It was one of the reasons she'd become a scientist in the first place. She wished she'd known more about forensic investigations. She might have ended up here sooner. Then again, she couldn't exactly complain about the path her life had taken her. She enjoyed every minute of working with her mates.

"Yes. I'm about to push it through the system, but I thought I'd give you a heads up. I know you'll want to add his species to your list."

She smiled even though he couldn't see it down the phone. "You're too good to me, Zack."

"Oh, I know." He hung up without waiting for her to respond.

She rolled her eyes in bemusement and set the phone back into the cradle. They needed to come up with a better system of communicating between the different rooms and floors of the building. Perhaps more of an intercom system would work. Sometimes, she wanted to answer but didn't have the free hand to do it.

Luckily for her, this time she'd been filling out paperwork at her desk and desperate for a distraction from it.

And this one was perfect, especially as it would result in a new label for her pet project.

She grabbed her tablet and opened John Doe's file. She wouldn't have to call him that for much longer, and she was excited at the prospect of changing it. She hadn't broken down again after her moment with Issac, but she was still aware of the man's lack of identity every time she saw something to do with his file. It would be good to put a name, and a face, to the victim.

Zack's alert popped up almost instantly. She clicked on it, pulling up the facial reconstruction Zack's friend had done. There were a lot of similarities to both Hughes and Owens. Perhaps the killer had a type, though with paranormals that was less of a thing. Most of the paranormals Cassie knew had never really thought much about who attracted them. When the universe had one or more fated mate in store already, it wasn't so important.

"Philip Duke," she said aloud, trying his name out and seeing if it fit him. It seemed a surprisingly normal name for such an interesting skeleton.

She tapped the screen, delving further into his file. Her eyebrow raised. A siren? That was unusual. They didn't spend much time on land. Which meant that two of their victims were from species who didn't spend a lot of time in the human world. And their third victim was lacking a relative to come and pick the body up. At least according to the silence after Zack sent letters for them to come and do it.

All three victims were fairly isolated from society in general. Was
