SHORTLY AFTER, Charlotte went over to her sister and asked her to keep Will distracted until we were done talking. Miranda didn’t need to be asked twice. She let Will escort her to a far table, where they quietly chatted and laughed. It was nice to see Miranda on the receiving end of attention from a boy she liked. Most guys at our school were too intimidated by her intellect and gruff personality to approach her, much less admit they found her smoking hot.

“How much longer are you gonna play Peeping Tom?” Mason’s question pulled my focus back to the table.

“Sorry. I’m just really happy for Miranda.”

Charlotte glanced over at her sister and beamed. “Me too.”

“The only thing I feel is sorry for Will.” Mason’s smirk turned into a grimace of pain when Charlotte popped him on the shoulder. “Hey! That hurt.”

“Good,” she chirped.

Why was I constantly cast as the referee? “Okay. Let’s focus. We don’t have a lot of time before we have to get goin’. We still have those ingredients to collect for Thad before we have to head home.”

That comment got Charlotte’s attention. “What spell is Thad attempting to cast?”

“Nuh-uh.” Mason wagged his finger. “Ladies first.”

She rolled her eyes. “Fine, but I better not get in trouble for this.” I hoped she didn’t either. She was taking a big risk by breaking protocol, but the information we shared could prove valuable to everyone. “A week ago the Conclave’s magical alarms went off, and they asked my coven to look into it.”

Mason’s eyes met mine. The last time this happened, Ben Crane and his vampyre crony had flown into town and started killing people. That was how this whole mess got started. “A magical disturbance?”

“Well—” Charlotte grimaced and slightly shook her head. “They couldn’t tell.”

“What?” My question came out louder than I expected. Several customers looked over at me; even Will and Miranda had taken a break from their flirting to glance our way. I took a deep breath and tried again. “How is that possible?”

“They aren’t sure, and neither are we,” she answered with a shrug. “All they told us was that something foreign blipped on their radar, but ever since that first warning, they’ve sensed nothing.”

“Like the spell Ben cast creating a magical blind spot around Havenbridge?” Mason asked.

Charlotte shook her head. “No. It was nothing like what happened during Mabon. They likened it to a missile being launched from a silo but then disappearing over the skies of Havenbridge.”

That was a terrifying analogy. What had been fired at us, and where was it now? “And this couldn’t be Icarian somehow arrivin’ in town?”

Mason was the first to answer. “No. From what we’ve gathered about Icarian, he’s extremely powerful. Someone like that would leave a magical wake wherever he went.”

Charlotte nodded. “Which explains why he used Ben and Sersie to do his dirty work. They could slip in and out of town without sending up any red flags.”

“What about the dark fae?” I asked. They were beings made entirely of magic and had been in league with Ben.
