“When are you going to hear from that school?” Nancy asked one night. “It’s taking forever, and I’m dying to know.”

“Oh, the letter came last week,” I said.

Her eyebrows shot up. “And?”

I shrugged. “It doesn’t matter.”

“Oh, honey, I’m so sorry. You were a perfect fit there.”

“Come on, Nancy. I’d have been at least four years older than the other students, all of whom, by the way, would have finished high school. Even if they’d accepted me, I would have failed out in the first month, and we both know it.”

“This is a makeup certificate, GuoGuo. Your six years in the beauty business are far more valuable than some run-of-the-mill high school diploma. And you’re fabulous at what you do. What, you want proof? Just look at my brows. Perfect every time.”

I wasn’t sure this pep talk was helping as much as it was hurting. She was right about one thing, though; I ought to have more faith in my abilities.

Nancy offered me another beer, and we spent the next few minutes drinking in companionable silence. Suddenly, she banged her bottle on the table, foam spewing in all directions. “Well, to hell with them! They don’t deserve you, anyway. Let’s burn that letter. It’ll be fun.”

Pulling it from my purse, I held it up. I wasn’t sure why I’d bothered keeping it. It seemed easy enough to let it go now. “Light the match,” I said, laughing.

“Look, even the printing is pretentious,” Nancy sneered. “I bet the letter’s even worse, huh?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“I never opened it,” I said, shrugging. “I didn’t need to. I know what it says.”

“Well, I want to read it.”

Nancy snatched the envelope from my hand and ripped it open. “Dear Miss Guo, Shanghai Theater Academy…blah blah blah…prestigious…blah blah blah…highly competitive…blah…” She stopped reading, and a slow but certain grin slowly unfurled across her face. Suddenly, her eyes met mine. “GuoGuo, you got in.”

“What? No. No…”

“Yes. ‘Congratulations on your acceptance. The deadline for payment is August 15, 2005’.”

I covered my mouth in shock. “I assumed… I was so sure I wouldn’t… I—”

“We’re going to the Academy!” she squealed.

Disappearing to the back, she returned moments later with a chilled bottle of champagne. “I’ve had my fingers crossed,” she said. “I’m so proud of you, GuoGuo.”

Popping the cork, she filled two glasses and then in Nancy fashion, shouted out, “Everybody, raise your drink to GuoGuo!”

I covered my face, laughing, because, of course, no one knew why they were cheering or even who I was. Turning back to Nancy with tears in my eyes, I mouthed, “Thank you.”
