Chapter Twenty-Seven
Xerus
I opened my bedroom doors to find a breakfast buffet in my sitting room. I was nervous about saying my vows accurately today though, so the sight of food turned my stomach.
That didnât, however, mean I didnât desperately need that coffee in the middle of the table. I made a beeline for it and poured myself a large mug full of it. Then I went to sit in the windowsill, gazing out. I held the mug close to my chest; its hot contents to me were holy and a representation of all things good in life.
âAre you worshipping the coffee?â Xenon came out wearing only pants. Even though he was as ancient as a dragon could get, he still looked like he was in his early forties when he was in human form. Then again, I supposed he could make himself look however he wished.
I didnât answer his question. Nothing good ever came out of my mouth before I was caffeinated. I watched as some of our guests joined Jaxon on his run, and I smiled to think of how he must be frowning. His morning run was like my coffee: he liked to do it alone and he didnât like to speak until afterward. Chances were he was running extra hard or fast to try and shake the group that had joined him. Then I spotted some family from other realms. Uncle and Aunt Owyxko in particular caught my eye. They looked well, and that made me happy. It was good that they were taking care of themselves. Their son had died centuries ago. I thought of my sister, Danxing, and a wave of sadness swept over me. She would have loved today. I knew Aexie was excited for today, but Danx would have been beyond excited, beyond thrilled. She loved pretty things and family coming together.
Xenon cocked his head at my non-answer and came over, carefully grabbing the coffee carafe on the way. He reached out tentatively as if I might explode and refilled my cup, mocking me as he backed up carefully, one hand in the air. I rolled my eyes. At that, he chuckled and turned to the buffet. He dove in, munching on one pastry after another.
I turned my attention back to the window and wondered how my bond with my siblings would change after today. Right now, I could choose when to let Xenon in. Would that still be the case after Iâd taken the blood oath? Even now, even with my walls up, I could feel his excitement. He looked much calmer than he really was, likely appeasing my slow morning start.
I watched as he moved on to a plate of fruit, having polished off all but one pastry. Part of me noted it was my favorite pastry, and I slowly dimmed the thin mental wall I usually kept between us. He froze for a moment, probably receiving my feelings, then continued to ignore me as he devoured the fruitâall but the grapes.
