Chapter 14

Magnolia Cove’s town hall was packed to the gills. There were so many folks inside, a normal building would’ve burst at the seams.

Luckily this wasn’t a normal town.

Most of the werewolves sat up front. Zuroff had saved a couple of seats. Axel had saved some as well. He motioned for me to come. I made a point of leading Ainsworth over. Rufus cocked a brow but said nothing.

The fox had saved my life. That meant more to me than conjecture and suspicion. Until there was a reason not to trust Ainsworth, I would continue to believe that he didn’t mean us any harm.

Besides, I had a soft spot for animals. Wasn’t that obvious? I did run the familiar store in town.

“How does this work?” I asked Axel.

He nodded toward the bench. “The mayor and those in charge will hear the arguments and decide what to do next.”

Sitting behind a long, curved table was Gilda, Garrick and several other folks who were high up in Magnolia Cove’s government. It surprised me that Betty wasn’t up there. After all, on more than one occasion she had mentioned that she ran this town. But then again, my grandmother liked to run things in the shadows, where no one could see what she was doing.

Gilda spoke into a microphone. “Honeys, I would like for all of y’all to settle down. We’re gonna start hearing what y’all have to say real soon, now, okay? So y’all just take a second and get quiet ’cause these old ears have a hard time hearing when there’s a lot of background noise.”

The room quieted, and I spied Cordelia sitting real cozy with Larkin. She glanced over her shoulder and saw me, then faced Gilda again.

Well, I guess we still weren’t on good terms.

“Now, I will start, and tell y’all the town’s original position on this matter,” Gilda said. “A few days ago, we got word that the clan Reign of werewolves needed shelter. Axel Reign—I know y’all know him. Some of you ladies used to call him Mr. Sexy.” There were many a laugh then. “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that out loud. But anyway, they are his people, and seeing as how Axel is a good person, we decided to lower the shields and let them in.”

Gilda paused to take a sip of water. Lots of folks whispered among themselves.

“In hindsight, we should have taken a town vote, but what’s done is done. The town’s position is that we help those in need, even if they aren’t witches.”

“Here, here,” Betty said.

“Now,” Gilda continued. “I believe some people do not agree with this position, but I can assure you the folks of Clan Reign have already been a help. They’re searching for a werewolf that is attempting to terrorize our town.”

“A werewolf,” snipped Alma. “Who is it?”

“Is Axel Reign here?” Gilda asked. “Maybe he can fill us in.”

He sighed. “Here goes.”

My husband stood and addressed the crowd. “We don’t know who the werewolf is, unfortunately.
