CHAPTER 14

I got home and started making supper. I wasn’t a great cook, but there were about three things that I could make well. One of them was a spaghetti bake. I hardly ever put it together because it was a lot of carbs and Axel complained that it would make him fat. Personally I didn’t believe that anything could make my husband fat. He was perfect.

But I wasn’t dealing with my husband, now was I? I was dealing with Adam, and he could wind up weighing as much as a two-story building for all I cared.

With Betty watching Gizzy, the house was eerily quiet, so quiet that I put on some music while I gathered the ingredients.

“What are you doing?” Mattie asked from her sun-drenched spot on the floor.

“Oh!” I tossed a pot into the air in fright, barely having time to zap it back into my hands before it clattered to the floor. “I didn’t see you there. You nearly scared me half to death.”

She yawned. “You were too busy humming to yourself to see me.” Mattie’s ears swiveled like satellites atop her head. “I don’t hear the baby. What you got going on?”

“Oh, I’m having a special dinner with Axel.”

“I see. What’re you making?”

“Spaghetti bake.”

“It’ll make him fat,” she argued.

“Let’s just say, I’m not worried about that.”

She sat up and eyed me suspiciously. “Why not? He’s complained about it before.”

I shrugged as I waved my hand and the pot moved to the sink. The faucet turned on, and water filled the container. “Axel’s not going to gain any weight. You know how much he works out, and he eats really well most of the time.”

“Something’s going on. Pepper, what is it?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re lying.”

My grandmother and cousins already knew my suspicions. It wouldn’t be right if everyone on God’s green earth knew what I suspected. The information would get back to Adam and then goodness knew what would happen to Axel.

No. It was best if I kept some information to myself. So in answer to Mattie’s question, I scoffed. “You’re putting words in my mouth. I just think Axel’s been acting a little funny lately, so I thought that I’d cheer him up with this dish.”

“He keeping something from you, sugar?”

“I’m sorry?” How could the cat hit the nail on the head so quickly? “Hiding something? No, not at all.”

She sat up and stretched her legs in front of her. “In that case, you need to work a truth potion on him.”

Now she had my attention. “Truth potion? What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the fact that you could work one on him to find out what it is that you want to know. It might be better than baking him a spaghetti that’ll just make him fat.”

“It won’t make him fat.” She gave me a stern look. “Okay, it won’t make him fat unless he eats too much of it.”

“That’s better.”

“But what about this truth serum are you talking about?”

“Oh, so you’re interested?”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

She lifted her nose.
