“THIS PIECE WAS INSPIRED by the traditional cameo,” Rachel explained. She lifted the silver pin from the felt-lined cubbyhole in her sample case so the shop buyer could examine the details. “You can insert a photograph in this space, but it doesn’t have to be a portrait. It could be a flower, or a pet, or a miniature work of art.”

“Oh, this is lovely,” the woman crooned, turning the piece several times.

Rachel knew that she was checking the craftsmanship as well as the kind of materials used. “You’ll notice that there’s a safety catch so there’s no chance that the pin might come undone and fall off.”

“Yeah, I see what you mean. I like the way you’ve done it here. You do quality work.”

Rachel smiled, taking the pin back. “I’ve applied the same technique to the backs of my necklaces.”

“Excellent,” the woman said. She smiled broadly at Rachel. “Well, as usual I think you’ve made a sale, my dear.”

“Wonderful,” Rachel said politely. She’d learned over the last several years not to be too eager or too grateful. “How many would you like?”

“I’ll take a dozen of the pins. These will sell very nicely to our artistic customers. The folks in the West End will snap these up. How soon can you make delivery?”

“If it will help you out, I can sell you some of my samples. I have duplicates, so it won’t leave me short.”

“That would be great, luv. Do you mind?” the woman asked, her hands already sifting through the sample case for the pieces she wanted.

In the meantime, Rachel began writing up the order. She also did a quick calculation of how much profit she’d cleared so far to put toward bankrolling her purchase of the house on Highland Beach. She’d been in London for three days, and not an hour went by that she didn’t wish she could have postponed her business trip even longer. She still hadn’t recovered from Lucas’s astonishing attempt to buy her half of the house, but it put her on alert that he was serious. On the one hand, it infuriated her that he would be so selfish as to try and squeeze her out. On the other, Rachel wished she’d thought to make an offer to him first.

She wasn’t surprised that he wanted the house. How could he not? She could tell from that first day they’d both arrived on Highland Beach that he’d quickly fallen under its spell. He had good reasons for wanting to be there. Far better than her own. While she patiently waited for her client, Rachel lamented that she would love to damn Lucas to hell for what he was trying to do, if it weren’t for the fact that she’d recently discovered she liked him.

“Now then, luv. I’ll take these fifteen pairs of earrings, and five necklaces. Is that too much?”

Rachel kept her demeanor calm and accommodating. “Not at all. Choose as many as you want.”

Ka-ching, ka-ching.

“Good! I’ve also taken a fancy to these bracelets. I think I’ll get this one for myself,” the store manager giggled.
