Chapter 14

Amelia took up position by Darla. She acted aloof enough, which for my cousin, unfortunately, came naturally.

She extended her hand. “I’m Amelia. How do you do?”

Darla eyed her offering like a strange beast before she ever so slowly reached out and gave her hand a shake. “Very well, thank you.”

That was all the invitation that Amelia needed. She sidled up to Darla, just waiting for the moment to slip the necklace from around her throat and destroy the jewel.

I really prayed that we weren’t wrong in our theory. Or was it a hypothesis? I could never get those two right. Which came first? It was like trying to figure out if the answer was the chicken or the egg.

I pulled the box from the purse slung over my shoulder and opened it.

“What’s that?” Etta asked, peering to get a better look. “Is that supposed to get me a unicorn?”

“That is our hope,” I ground out.

“Well, I hope it works better than it looks. Because from here it doesn’t appear to be more than a dried-up husk.”

Can I please scorch her? Hugo asked. I won’t do it very hard. Just a light dusting. I can even make it look like an accident.

I stifled a laugh and patted his neck. “Not today. We must focus on this. Everyone who is not a part of the spell must step back.” Larkin and Shoo looked at me through blank eyes full of enchantment. “That means you.”

Betty and Cordelia pulled them away. When they were at a safe distance, Betty called to me. “We’re ready.”

Amelia waved. “I’m ready.”

Me too, Hugo said telepathically.

I plucked the tip of unicorn horn from its cushion inside the box and asked Sherman, “Should I throw it?”

“Hold it,” Axel answered.

My eyes flared. “Are you sure? That’ll roast me if I hold it while Hugo blasts fire at it.”

He cupped my hand with his. “It won’t. Trust me.”

Sherman scratched his head. “Wish I had a solid answer for you, but I think Axel’s right. You’ll have to hold it. This is a piece of majestic beast, not a chip of cow dung. It must be revered.”

I understood what he was saying, but that didn’t mean I liked it. My breath shook. “Are you sure?”

“As sure as I can be. If you want me to hold it, I will.”

“No. This isn’t your fight.” I lifted the shard of horn high and said on an exhale, “Hugo, fire at will.”

Which was a very cool thing to say because I’d only ever heard it mentioned in movies, but that didn’t stop my throat from shriveling to the size of a pine nut.

Smoke curled from his nostrils as flames churned deep in Hugo’s throat.

Axel grabbed my elbow and started feeding magic into me. “Do the same,” he commanded.

I channeled all my power into my hand, creating a shield around my flesh to protect it.

Hugo opened his mouth and, with a great exhale, released a finger of fire. The orange and yellow flames licked the horn.
