Chapter 15
Color flashed out of the corner of his scarred left eye. Sam turned his head toward the pond. And there she was standing in a white dress with pink roses and a white brimmed hat. Geese chased her around the pond as she threw bits of bread to them; she laughed as they followed her.
As he stood staring at this lovely woman in the distance, a raindrop fell on his cheek and then another. The sun hid behind the threatening clouds while they once again poured down a steady rain. Carrie ran toward the manor; her shoes sinking into the ground.
He ducked from the balcony before she saw him to put on his disguise. Once downstairs, he peered out the kitchen window to find her hunched under the small ridge covering the back door. She shivered rubbing her arms and cursing at the fickle weather. Sam laughed. He was thrilled to see her.
Composing himself, he opened the door, “You’re a sight for sore eyes, would you care to come in, ma’am?” he said in his low raspy voice.
Startled at his presence, Carrie looked at him, her faced flushed in surprise. “Ye…Yes…I would,” she said through chattering teeth. “I’m sorry to intrude… I was feedin’ the geese and thought the rain… was done for the day.”
“It’s no trouble, Miss Carrie, come in. I’m glad you came by,” he said, “let me get you some towels…please follow me.”
Carrie stepped through the doorway, “Oh wait, my shoes are in a sorry shape…”
“Here, let me help you.” Stephen bent down and tenderly took off each mud caked shoe laying them beside the back door.
“Thank you, sir.” A deep scarlet flushed her cheeks.
Trying to hide her embarrassment, she followed him into the parlor when he turned asking her to stand beside the crackling fire. “Please come here and warm yourself, I’ll be back,” he said.
She held her cold hands toward the soothing heat moaning as her fingers came alive again. Despite his appearance, Stephen’s personality won her over from the moment they met in the boutique. Something familiar about him mesmerized her. He made her feel…comfortable.
Stephen returned with two fluffy bath towels. She carefully wiped her face and neck and then took off her hat laying it on the velvet sofa.
Stephen laughed, “You poor girl…how ‘bout some hot tea…orange/cinnamon alright?”
“That would be wonderful,” she said towel drying her hair.
Carrie patted herself dry as best she could. She looked down to discover how clingy her wet clothes had become. Mortified at her appearance she frantically tried pulling the fabric away from her chest. Wrapping her breasts like the other ladies did for that fashionable, youthful boyish look of the 20’s didn’t appeal to her. It was literally too painful, especially since she was clearly well endowed.
A true southern lady by nature, she opted for a clean feminine look. Her dresses were never too short and she didn’t fuss with all those new fancy hats. She wore her powder fresh and dewy with pretty peachy lipstick that complimented honey blond hair.
