Chapter 11

“I can’t believe it,” Paula wailed. “Corey Barton and Eloise Ellington. Who would have thought those two would get together?”

After she left Eloise’s house, Julia called Paula and asked her to pick up Bridget. She wanted to arrange a meeting to discuss everything she had discovered since seeing them earlier in the day.

“And so soon after Morris’ death?” Bridget chimed in.

“Who’s to say this was the first time they hooked up?” Julia questioned.

“Are you thinking the two of them were having an affair?”

“I don’t know, Paula. I know I didn’t see Corey’s truck anywhere on the street when I left Eloise’s house. That makes me think they were trying to hide the fact that he was there from everyone.”

“You said Detective Evans told you that Eloise and Corey were suspects, right?” Bridget asked.

“He did.”

“Did he mention an affair? Or why they were suspects,” Paula added.

“I don’t think the detective knows about the affair. He said that Corey was a suspect because he had threatened Morris. He then told me that Eloise’s neighbors heard her and Morris arguing and that she'd threatened to ‘chop off certain parts of his anatomy’ a few days before he died.”

“Are you going to tell the police about what you saw at Eloise’s tonight?”

“Oh, I’m not sure if I should, Bridget. We don’t know if they were having an affair before Morris died. What I saw could have been something brand new. I wouldn’t want to accuse someone until I have proof they did something wrong.”

The three women sat silently for several minutes before anyone spoke.

“So, who do you think this Mr. V is, and why was Morris meeting with him so much?” Paula finally broke the silence.

“I think I know where we can find out.”

The gleam in Julia’s eye made her friends groan involuntarily.

“What?”

“Nothing, we just know that look you have when you come up with one of your schemes. Right, Bridget?”

“It usually means we’re not going to like what you’re thinking of getting us into.”

Julia snorted in mock offense. “My plans aren’t that bad.”

“Not always, but sometimes you act before you think, and that can get you and us in trouble.”

“Does that mean you are going to let me go alone?” Julia asked her friends.

“No,” the women said in unison.

“Good,” Julia continued. “I’ve been thinking about the matchbook I found in Morris’ office. It was from Lucky’s Strike, and there wasn’t just one; there was a whole stack of them. It might even be where he had been meeting Mr. V.”

“What makes you think that?” Paula questioned.

“Well, the notations on Morris’ calendar about the meetings were on Saturday nights at ten o’clock. There were a whole bunch of matchbooks from Lucky’s. What other place do you know is open around here on a Saturday at that time?”

Although they didn’t want to admit it, Julia’s explanation sounded reasonable. The only problem was that Lucky’s Strike wasn’t the most prestigious place in Merrimount. In fact, it wasn’t much more than a seedy bar where locals who didn’t mind rubbing elbows with shady characters congregated.
