After the armory, Llyons led them to a tailor, where they did not linger long. The warrior walked in, grabbed a wrapped package â Weaver didnât know what was inside â and walked back out. By the time they returned to the inn, Delhyn was waiting for them. After dropping off the package in their room, they followed the captain down to the Citadel gates, and then beyond, into the gardens.
The Citadelâs grounds were even more impressive up close than from afar. Every tree, bush and shrub seemed perfectly trimmed, down to the smallest blade of grass. Delhyn was quiet as they walked the path through the gardens to the Citadel, which seemed to suit Llyons, who wore his usual cloak of silence. But Weaver found himself disappointed. He had hoped the captain would notice his new weapons displaying his ability and say something . . . alas, this was not the case.
Inside the citadel, footsteps echoed in the long, thin corridorâs immense grey walls. No tapestries or paintings adorned the hallway. Instead, each wall was a mass of intricate engravings depicting different elven scenes. Weaver was amazed at the detail etched into each; ceremonies, gatherings, celebrations, and battles, all immortalized in the hardened stone. The battles were his favorite, depicting armies and heroes of elven-kind triumphing over their foes. The Citadel seemed designed as the rest of Murrandeyl: mute colors and symmetric patterns, all created by deft hands â a chilled, hard beauty.
Weaver wished they would slow their pace so he could get a better look at the engravings, but Delhyn was leading them in haste. They made their way down long halls, up spiraling staircases, and through grey corridors. It was like traveling a labyrinth, randomly turning this way and that, each hall dreadfully similar to the last. Weaver no longer knew which direction was which. Once in a while, they would break free from the enclosed halls and out onto the wide bridges that connected the spires. In those brief moments, he could see where he was in relation to the grounds, but as soon as they re-entered the Citadel, he was lost again.
âHow does anyone find their way around in here?â he breathed to himself as they took yet another turn leading to another spiraling staircase. The journey was starting to make him feel uneasy, as he had in the forest when led astray by the fae.
âCaptain Delhyn?â he finally asked as they reached the top of the steps. âAre we almost there?â Normally, he would have just followed Llyonsâs lead, but the pit in his stomach was deepening as he could see yet another long grey hall.
âWe are,â Delhyn answered. âReaching the throne room and the Harkonâs chambers is not meant to be simple . . . a deterrence for would-be enemies of His Elemence.â
Another two turns, and the surroundings began to change. Vaulted, arched ceilings rose above their heads, hung with gold and purple tapestries, and the once-narrow walls widened. Brilliantly colored stained glass windows lined the hall, and large marble pillars rose between them.
