When I woke again, the room was too lit up for my morning vision. Before I properly opened my eyes, I could swear I saw a shadow move next to the bed. A few more blinks after, nothing, and no one else was in there with me.

Getting up required much more effort than I had expected. My left arm was sore as hell, and it was useless. I accidentally leaned on it and felt like I was going to pass out from the pain. So, no more of that. As I got up and moved around, my arm hurt even from the mere presence of air.

This is going to be “fun”.

There was a sling on my nightstand. I hung it over my head and placed my left arm through it. It was better than letting my arm loose as I would be tempted to use it like I usually did. Yet the pain of bending my arm at the elbow and hanging it on the sling sent hot shivers across my body.

I couldn’t remember much from last night. I blamed it on the adrenaline and the quick pass out. This pain I had now—this pain I would endure for a while.

I was still in my PJs, and it didn’t even cross my mind to try to change clothes. I only bothered with brushing my teeth and hair.

I found more people at the massive table between the houses than yesterday—five of them and the most adorable little girls. The tiniest ran to me, a pink flower in her hand. She fully extended her hand up her head, offering it to me. My heart melted right there. The girl had two high ponytails, bronzed skin, and chocolate eyes. I could have eaten her.

“Is this for me?” I asked as I lowered to her level, her hand following me. She nodded and scratched her ear with her other hand. “Thank you. It’s very beautiful. Like you,” I said, and I bumped her nose. She giggled and ran back to the table before I could ask her name. She settled next to the other tiny human, who seemed slightly taller. I put the flower behind my ear.

“How’s the arm, Sophie?” Kalea asked as I reached the table. She sat between a broad-shouldered man, who I presumed would be her husband and the two tiny humans. Raiden, Kaira, and Ailani sat on the other bench.

“Here,” Raiden said as he stood up and showed me to his spot. I sat between him and Kaira.

“It’s…been better,” I said, not willing to seem brave just for the sake of it. “It’s easier with the sling, thank you.”

“We need to go through a couple more healing sessions, and it will feel brand new. The wound was too bad to be healed from the first session,” she explained. Under the bright morning light, Kalea resembled Ailani even more. Or Ailani resembled her, I guessed. Sheer beauty ran in the family.

As curious as I was to meet everyone, I was hungrier. We could chat while I made myself a plate.
