12: Encumbered with Information

Sophie

When I opened my eyes, I was lying in bed alone. With Caine’s intoxicating embrace lingering on my skin, I swam in thoughts of him while trying to ignore the reminder of the void left without that brand of comfort for too long.

Caine was now aware of events leading up to last night. I’d succeeded in what I set out to accomplish. Yesterday’s trepidation to enlighten Caine with the hideous truth had been filled with anxiety. Today brought hope Aunt Lacey and the Coven could save him. They had to. What’s the point of having power if not to help people?

I was too euphoric to worry about fallout. I sprang out of bed to shower. Afterward, I dressed and pulled my hair back into a wet ponytail before calling Kim.

“Hey Soph, no wellness check needed, I see.” Kim’s voice was hesitant. “Did you escape or take him down before he got you first?”

“No need to take out his nuts, but we did climb a tree. I told him everything. He’s okay.”

“Define okay?”

I recounted the night. The excitement in my voice was addictive and, by the end, Kim was ready to get a move on. As in right now.

“Okay, okay. We’ll head to Aunt Lacey’s to formulate a plan. Bring Bosco. And relax before you give yourself a stroke.”

On the way to NOTL, Kim wasn’t herself. After her excitement on the phone, I expected her bouncy optimism to annoy me halfway out of the city. Instead, she sat in the seat next to me tense and silent. When I asked her if she was okay, she fluffed it off and focused on the road like we were driving through a snowstorm and not a clear, sunny day.

When we arrived at Aunt Lacey’s, I still found it weird to walk into the house without knocking, but we did anyway. Kim had no aversion to it.

“Put Bosco in the backyard. He can entertain himself,” Aunt Lacey called from the kitchen, before seeing we had Bosco with us.

Kim smiled at my “I’m weirded out” expression, but even that was tense. What was with her today?

After Bosco ignored me to alligator-whip his stuffed frog, I heard movement and saw a tall, metal ladder leaning against the house at the far corner. At the top was Donovan, wearing only dark cargo shorts and a pair of gloves, cleaning out the gutters. Music from his earbuds floated all the way down to me. Big job for a huge house. The height of the ladder alone had me squeamish. His back glistened with sweat, reddened by the sun, the muscles flexing with each reach as he wrestled with clots of decayed leaves.

Why is he always here? And doing his Coven leader’s gutters? My dirty mind went to dirty places. House boy with benefits? I didn’t get that vibe from either of them, but what did I know?

He paused mid-reach and froze that way for a heartbeat, then looked straight down at me. I felt my eyes widen, his expression crunched before it smoothed and he pulled an earbud out of one ear.
