Chapter 17
Denver
I was in a funk. A big, wallowing funk. Had been since the whole Calder thing. Back to my day job, to normality. To hammers and shovels and tape measurers and customers and regular non-mythical people.
I found myself staring extra long at each new person I saw, looking for a hint of gills at the back of their necks, even though they hadnât been visible in Calderâs human form. I looked for filmy eyes and headphones, both of which I saw on occasion and it got my hopes up for a moment. Though the old man with cataracts or the teenager blasting music werenât likely to be anything other than what they seemed. Still, I looked. As if there were merfolk walking around buying supplies for home improvement projects.
Ella snapped her fingers in front of me. I might have spaced out, staring at a red-haired man that passed by the shop. His hair was strawberry blond and short, nothing like the deep red strands that Iâd wrapped around my hand. âOkay, loverboy. You gotta snap out of it. Itâs been weeks since you saw the guy.â
I scrubbed my hand over my face âI know. Iâm trying. I canât seem to shake him though.â
Ella whistled, âThat must have been some dick if itâs got you all twisted up like this over it.â
It was. I still fantasized over the way it felt to have Calder inside me, but not only that, simply being with him. The way he held me, touched me, kissed me, made me feel as if I belonged with him. But that was only a small part of it. The sex had been great, but it was everything else that came with it. The way my world expanded when I was with him. The way I felt special for owning the attention of such an incredible being. The way it felt like I was now living in black and white when I once had a taste of technicolor.
âI guess for a minute there, I thought we had something. It gave me hope.â
âThatâs not a bad thing. To have hope. Youâve been stuck in the doorway of life, afraid to take a step out into it. You met a guy, you stepped out. Maybe it didnât work out, but itâs still a step further than where you were. Donât get yourself stuck there. Take another step and another, and maybe someday youâll be running again. Running towards something without hesitation.â
I bumped my shoulder against Ellaâs. âYouâre like a guru, a power-tool-wielding guru.â
âDamn straight. Leave it to the lesbians. We can fix houses and hearts.â She tugged on her open plaid shirt and held her head high. âBesides, thereâs other fish in the sea.â
I snorted at her choice of words. Not like him, there werenât. But she was right. Even if things werenât meant to be for me and Calder, it gave me a taste of life again. And I wanted more.
âOh, and by the way. You might want to check your voicemails.
