After the chaos of the last few days, the rendezvous with the army was delightfully straightforward. Angela had sent a messenger to meet the approaching unit and give them directions to the farmhouse. After killing the Family assassin, they’d returned to the farmhouse and slept for the rest of the night. By the time they woke, the army was already near.

Tomas sat with Ben on the porch. The sounds of children running, arguing, and preparing for the day served as a constant backdrop. The front door opened, and Angela and Rachel stepped through. Until the door closed, the porch was twice as loud as it had been, rendering conversation impossible. The door closed on a chorus of groans. No small number of the children wanted to join Angela and meet with the soldiers.

“Let’s go,” Angela said.

“If you don’t mind, I’m going to stay here,” Tomas said.

“Why?”

“I want to talk to Ben before we leave.”

Angela shook her head. “I’m sure the commander is going to want to meet you.”

“And we’ll have plenty of time between here and Porum. This is more important.”

It looked like she was about to fight him over it, but then she shrugged. “Suit yourself, I suppose.” She and Rachel stepped off the porch and walked to where the unit had stopped. Tomas watched them for a bit, using the distraction as a way to delay saying what needed to be said. Ben, for his part, seemed perfectly content to sit and watch the world go by.

“I’m sorry about what I said last time,” Tomas said.

“You’re forgiven.”

“That simple?”

“That simple.”

Tomas scratched at his chin. “I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said. Do you truly believe the church doesn’t need to be destroyed?”

“I think these plans to build super-weapons need to be stopped, and I care little for the knights, inquisitors, and champions, but I don’t think the church needs to fall completely. It needs to change.”

“Sometimes it’s easier to change when everything burns down and you start from scratch.”

“True enough, but the scale of the church is incredible. There’s a reason the army hasn’t shut down the churches in the east, even as they fight the church for land out west. It’s a part of society, and one we need. Burning it down would hurt tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people.”

“So, what do you think I should do?”

“Mostly what you’re doing now. Stop them from developing that weapon. After that, rest. You’re only one man, and not even you can bring down the church. Accept that you’ve carried your burden far enough and lay it down before you drag it through the gate with you.”

Tomas chewed on that as he watched Angela speaking with the commander of the unit. He was a young man, clean-shaven, with a rifle across his back and a belt of ammunition around his waist. He looked like a child. Perhaps Ben had a point. Perhaps he was getting too old for this.

Though it was the discussion of the
