As it was, the rest of the day proved fruitless except for one small matter. Craig and Barry had spotted Hanson’s car heading out of the city. The time on the ANPR showed that he’d taken off the second Tina Sawyer had opened her front door to Sara and Carla.

“He didn’t hang around getting out of town, did he?” Sara mumbled, more to herself than anyone on her team.

She punched herself in the thigh and immediately caught Carla shaking her head. She mouthed an apology, and her partner accepted it.

“Okay, I’m calling it a day. It’s gone seven now. We haven’t found another sighting of him yet. The ANPRs will be doing their job throughout the evening, so there’s no reason for us to stick around any longer, agreed?”

They all nodded, and most of them seemed defeated by the day’s miserable outcome.

“Guys, don’t take this home with you. We’ve done our best. We’re stretched at this moment, working the two cases, so as my good partner over here is fond of saying, ‘Don’t beat yourself up over this’. I’m sure it’ll come right in the end. Let’s remain positive at all times. Negativity is never good for the soul, remember that. Now go home and get some rest, and we’ll pick up where we left off in the morning.”

Sara perched on the desk by the door and smiled and said farewell to each of them as they passed.

“Enjoy the rest of your evening, boss,” Jill replied, the slightest of smiles touching her lips.

Sara reached out and laid a hand on her forearm. “You, too, love. Chin up. We’ll get the bastard.”

Carla remained behind with Sara. The first words out of her mouth were, “I hope you’re going to listen to your own advice.”

Sara smiled. “Yep, I’m not going to give this case another thought for the rest of the evening.”

Inclining her head, Carla tutted. “Yeah, I’ll believe that when I see it. I mean it, you need to let it go this evening. Have a good night’s sleep, and we’ll hit the investigation and any possible leads that come in overnight hard first thing. Come on, we should both call it a day. I know I’m knackered, physically and mentally.”

“You go on ahead. I want to make a final call first and then, I promise, I’ll get on the road.”

“You can ring Lorraine en route,” Carla said with a smirk.

“You think you can read me like a book, don’t ya?”

“Yep.” Carla snatched her bag off the back of her seat and headed towards the door. “Send her my regards. See you in the morning. Oh, and be careful what you tell her.”

“I will. See you.”

Sara gave in, switched off the rest of the lights in the office and headed out of the door. In the car, she dialled Lorraine’s mobile. It went to voicemail, so she left a message. “Hi, just checking in on you. Give me a call if you can later.”

She ended the call and settled into her drive home, listening to her favourite love song compilation.
