Chapter Twelve

Viola was wearing Miss Havisham’s wedding dress again.

She was sitting in a window seat draped with cobwebs, looking out at a night sky while moonlight streaked in to illuminate her tear-stained face. Her matted dark hair was roped all around her, like she was Rapunzel waiting to throw it down. Waiting for a charming prince to climb to her rescue.

She really did look like Percy. Well, apart from the tattered soul and the obvious madness.

A small suitcase sat on the floor beside her. This time it was spiders instead of ants, crawling all over that suitcase. They wove and spun, covering it in a silky trap of webs. Perhaps for the ants.

Once again, “Bid Time Return” was playing, this time on a scratchy old record, sung by Oscar’s hollow voice. A cold voice.

“What choice do I have?” Viola whispered to the moon.

The moon offered none.

“He never came.”
