HEATHER WAS THE FIRST to break the ice and try to put Dave at ease after we all went inside the trailer. She went over to the sliding glass door and was looking at the view. "You sure have a beautiful view of the lake from up here." Dave must have added the deck after moving into the trailer as it looked years newer and in much better shape.

Dave’s arm and neck muscles didn't relax. "It's the only good thing about this place," he answered and was interrupted before he could say more.

"Daddy, the toilet won't flush. I think the pipe froze again." His daughter had come into the room with a plunger in her hand. She waved it at him, spraying us with water like the aspergillum a priest uses to bless his congregation with holy water. By the incredulous looks on the women’s faces, I knew they didn't feel blessed.

Heather missed the blessing and opened the door to the deck before stepping outside. "My God, Dave, this view is something to die for. Can I take a picture of that flag with Fred?"

“Uh sure,” he answered then sheepishly looked at us. “Why don’t you guys join her and I’ll fetch you a towel.”
