Anya Volkov’s eyes widen as she inspects me from head to toe. It’s like she doesn’t know where to look the way her gaze darts over my body at a frantic pace. When she snaps her eyes back to mine, she narrows them slightly.

I can imagine her surprise, I’m pretty fucking surprised too. Granted, I knew I had an identical twin sister out there. But knowing about it and seeing it first hand are two very different things. It’s like I’m looking into a mirror. A very warped mirror where I’m a mafia princess dressed in designer labels and have good posture.

“Who?” She says out loud in a thick Russian accent.

Her voice does something entirely different to me, because it reminds me how opposite we are. How she’s the enemy. How she hurt my real family. Giana. Despite our looks being almost 100% identical, it’s her accented voice that sets us apart. It proves the different paths our lives took straight from birth.

I used to want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I used to wish we would have some kind of twin connection when we saw each other. I assumed this would be difficult to do. But standing here now, I don’t see a sister. I feel nothing, well aside from the rage that’s been on a low simmer since Giana spoke of Anya’s actions. No. All I feel right now is the urge to take revenge. I don’t have a sister standing in front of me. Just some Russian monster who unfortunately shares my DNA.

“Anya,” I spit her name out like it disgusts me to say, because it does. She takes a step backwards at my tone and sucks in a breath.

“I don’t understand,” she replies, shaking her head.

“Daddy didn’t tell you?” I cock my head to the side, mimicking what the Salvatores used to do to scare the shit out of me.

“You’re American? Why do you look like me?”

“One might argue that you look like me.” I reply.

I take a step towards her, and her eyes dart to the blade clutched in my hand. She takes a retreating step for each of my advances and I let a sinister smile pull at the corner of my mouth. I’m scaring her. Good. I hope she feels small and cornered like Giana did when she was chained to a bed with no escape.

“I suppose I could tell you about how Ivan Volkov is not really your father. I could explain the story of how your real parents were murdered by the hands of who you call blood, but I don’t really feel like I owe you anything. You, however. You do owe me something.”

“What do you speak of?” She eyes the blade as she talks.

“It’s easier to just show you.”

In the blink of an eye, my wrist snaps in a way that sends my blade through the air and slices through her skin, embedding itself in her shoulder. She lets out a pained yelp and falls backwards, clutching the area around the blade.
