MADISON
I flop my overfilled turkey sandwich onto the plate. Leftovers from Thanksgiving are normally my favoriteâyou canât really go wrong with a turkey sandwich filled with cranberry sauce, and a slice of pumpkin pie for dessert. It just seems to age better by the day.
âHoney, youâve been very distracted since you arrived Wednesday night. Is it the dog?â Aunt Carol asks me as she redistributes stuffing into new plastic containers.
I think about what she asked, scratching the back of my head. Itâs so many things. âIâm sure Knox is taking care of him.â Because I know underneath his steely exterior that he cares for actual living things.
Yesterday, I had Thanksgiving dinner with my aunt and uncle. They invited a few neighbors over, and it was the usual meal that we have every year, my auntâs pecan clusters included.
My aunt smiles at me, and I notice her eyes indicate that she has something to share. âTell me more about Knox.â
Oh, itâs the interrogation round.
âHe is a bit of a nuisance, not exactly easy to deal with, and I canât really escape him. His sister is my student. Their parents passed, so she lives with their oldest brother, but they all kind of team up to watch out for her. Kind of sweet, really.â
âA nuisance can be good. Keeps you on your toes,â she mentions as she continues her quest to reorganize the kitchen counter.
I nibble on a piece of turkey. âThat he does,â I mumble then look at my phone for any news from Mr. Trouble himselfânothing. The only thing I see is a notification on the weather.
âSweety, youâve been daydreaming since you got here. I doubt itâs the dog, so tell me what is really bothering you.â
I never could hide my true feelings from my aunt. She was there when I got my first period and my mom was too busy with a work function. My aunt was also there when I went off to college.
âWe keep circling each other,â I begin to assess my situation. âDidnât start off on the right foot, in fact the wrong foot from moment one. But⦠Iâm not sure it was that wrong after all. Thereâs a spark, maybe. I just donât know how to handle it. Besides, itâs complicated since his sister is my student, and Iâm not sure if Knox and I are anything but a flirtation.â
My aunt closes the fridge and leans over the counter. âBut the heart wants what it wants, and how do you know if you donât explore further?â
âItâs risky,â I lament.
âFor your work or for your heart? Because the Madison I know wouldnât let obstacles get in her way.â
I look at her, and debate with myself if I can finally admit the truth. âYouâre right. I guess Iâm scared. What happens if we⦠discover more about one another?â
âWhatâs the worst that can happen? You realize that you have nothing in common, or⦠he could be everything youâve always wanted.â
I blow out a breath. I hate how people are wiser when theyâre older.
