Chapter 7

Sandy's calm acceptance of his reasons for not making love had him vaguely suspicious. He'd expected an argument or at least a debate. She had certainly taken it well and appeared to have put the discussion out of her mind. He looked at her again as she helped him search the harbor town. His flicker of suspicion was dampened by her apparently sincere interest in finding the misplaced Grimaldis. It was as if the revelations of the last two hours had never occurred. That was the last thing he would have expected from someone who, less than two weeks ago, responded so richly to his kisses. Who tasted and smelled like warm honey. Who had him hot just looking at her—

"What kind of mood were they in when you left them?" Sandy asked.

"Were who in?"

She laughed in that way that caused a warm, curling sensation in his chest. Was that sparkle in her eyes always there, or did it have something to do with the reflection from the harbor? He blinked, then looked at the sugar-white Cycladic houses on the hill behind her. "Oh, the Grimaldis. Not a happy mood. I thought if I got them out to Zephyros for a few days, they might loosen up and begin to enjoy themselves." He scanned the promenade so that he didn't have to look her in the eyes and risk losing his mind. "That's not entirely true. I needed to talk to you, and I haven't closed the deal with them yet, so I convinced them to come here for a couple of days instead of taking the ferry to Mykonos." Removing his sunglasses, he pinched the bridge of his nose and laughed. "I think they'd have been better off going on to Mykonos." He looked toward the empty space at the ferry dock, then sat down on a bench against the whitewashed wall. "Maybe they have gone to Mykonos."

"They're here somewhere," she said reassuringly. "But why would you say they'd be better off going to Mykonos?" Unzipping her hip pouch, she busily searched through it while she waited for his reply.

"Because Eleni's over there at her niece's wedding and won't be back until next week. I'd left the Grimaldis drinking ouzo at this taverna so that I could see about hiring another cook, and..."

"And?"

She placed an amber-colored barrette between her teeth and was smoothing her hair into a sleek ponytail as she looked at the fishing boats.

"And then I saw you." And I couldn't think of anything but you.

She didn't appear to be listening, and when she looked at him again, she threw her arms open in a gesture of surprise. "Oh, Alex. What fools we are. Think a minute," she said, pulling him from the bench and leading him down the promenade.

"The Grimaldis are here looking for items for their shops and catalog. Besides your rug shop, where else would they be?" Together they pointed at each other. "Bertram's!"
