“Thank you so much for seeing us today,” Maylee said in a saccharine-sweet Southern drawl that had started the second Soda’s aunt opened the door. “We know that this must be a rough time for you and your family, but we really want to get the piece published and need as much information as we can.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard about your blog,” Bakari’s aunt said, unsure exactly what Maylee was talking about but not able to resist the urge to see her name in print.

“Are any of your children or grandchildren here?” Jenn asked. “We’d love to get a shot at . . . I mean . . of all of you together.”

Blue snickered quietly and dropped her head so she was staring at the carpet, but Paula didn’t have that much restraint. She burst out laughing and then snorted, which caused Blue to start laughing and Jenn to join in.

“Excuse my associates, Ms. Henderson,” Maylee said, shooting a glare our way. “They aren’t allowed in public together very often and for good reason, obviously.”

Through her laughter, Paula choked out, “Sorry about that, ma’am. I almost roynt the whole gosh dang interview.”

“Goddammit,” Maylee whispered before she sniffed and then took a deep breath. When she looked back up, there were tears in her eyes as she choked out, “That’s Paula, our special little friend from the north.”

At Paula’s angry growl, Jenn started laughing so hard, she had a coughing fit. When Blue whispered, “Oh shit! I’m gonna pee,” Paula couldn’t hold her composure anymore and started laughing too.

“I’m confused,” Bakari’s aunt said as she looked from one woman to the other. “What publication do you work for again?”

“Alright, that’s enough!” I snapped as I walked toward the older woman. “Excuse these ladies, Aunt Patty. Sometimes they’re like wild animals who enjoy playing with their kill before they rip it apart and scatter the pieces to hell and back.”

“No, it’s hell and yonder!” Paula crowed. “Isn’t that one great?”

“Aunt Patty?” the woman asked, her eyes growing wider with every step I took toward her. “How did you know . . .”

“That’s what my boyfriend calls you,” I explained with a grin. “You might remember him - Bakari . . . your nephew?”

The woman stood a little straighter and snapped, “Please leave.”

“Not gonna happen, you old bitch. We’re here to talk, and you can either sit your fat troll ass down and listen, or we can tie you up and set you on fire until you’re willing to cooperate.”

“Look at our Sis, handling shit like a big girl. They grow up so fast,” Blue said, pretending to be choked up and dabbing at her eyes. “And she’s chosen fire as her niche! That’s a good one, honey. Aunt Blue is proud.”

“There’s too much flammable stuff in here, though. I’m not sure we could pull off an arson and get away with it,” Jenn mused as she looked around.

“I know someone who could give us a few tips if it comes to that,” Maylee suggested with a wry grin.
