Desensitization can be adaptive because it enables people to ignore irrelevant information and focus instead on relevant information. Surgeons, for example, must have a fair amount of desensitization to blood so that they can perform surgery without being distracted by it. In other contexts, such as for viewers of media, desensitization to blood and gore on television or video games is highly associated with less responsiveness to the effects of real violence (Smith & Donnerstein, 1998) and reduced inhibitions against behaving aggressively (Anderson & Bushman, 2001). Thus, media violence may increase aggression, at least in part, by desensitizing viewers to the effects of real violence (e.g., Griffiths & Shuckford, 1989; Smith & Donnerstein, 1998).

Figure 7.2 lists some of the factors related to aggression that were discussed in the previous sections.
