CHAPTER ELEVEN

Faith checked her phone. Still no response from David. She had sent three more texts, one each day since the first text went unanswered.

She sighed and slumped in her chair, staring blankly ahead at the wall. Turk sat in between the two beds, watching an old kids’ movie about two dogs and a cat who are separated from their family on a camping trip and have to find their way back. Michael was in the shower, his breakfast, like Faith’s left mostly uneaten.

She wished David would call. She hadn’t realized before how much she valued having him. At home, she thought of him more as a fun diversion than as a serious part of her life. She cared for him, of course, but time with him was time to stop thinking about the future and the dangers and disappointments it held.

She knew that was a large part of what was driving them apart now. He wanted Faith to commit to him for a long-term relationship, and she wanted to avoid anything that would require more effort from her. She wished now that she hadn’t been so closed-off. No doubt David was convinced that she didn’t want a future with him.

Frustration rose, and her breathing quickened. She wanted a future with him, but why did they have to talk about it now? Why couldn’t they just let it happen? I mean, God, did she need to pick out wallpaper now? When they were still in the honeymoon stage?

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Doctor West would say that Faith’s reluctance to discuss commitment was out of fear: fear that she would put effort into building a relationship only for it to fail or fear of admitting that she didn’t want a lifelong connection with David, meaning she lost out on the time they could have had.

Maybe that was true, but Faith didn’t think so. Simply put, she just didn’t want to have to work with David. David was her escape from work, her escape from thinking, from constantly analyzing every single person in her life until she couldn’t breathe.

He was easy. Or at least, he was supposed to be.

That wasn’t fair to him, though. She knew that. Every adult who’s ever had a relationship knows that they take hard work to maintain. She couldn’t expect to just float along.

She took another deep breath, and as she released it, she had to admit that there was more than just a desire for relaxation behind the damage to her relationship. Try as she might to escape it, there was still one thing in her life that she couldn’t leave behind. The monkey was still on her back and when she allowed herself to think, it quickly became all she could think about.

She recalled her date with David the night she received this case. He had accused her of tuning him out while she brainstormed about the copycat Donkey Killer case, and he was right. She had ignored him so she could toss around the possibility that Clark was the killer.
