âSo Franks was a dead end too, huh?â Tom said after the agents related their story. He sighed and shook his head. âWell, that puts us back to square one.â
âWhat about the rest of the list?â Michael said. âWe still have to interview them.â
âWe did,â Tom replied. âI sent officers to each of the ownersâ houses and businesses. They were all reluctant to talk at first, but once they did, they were all able to provide alibis, same as Franks.â
âWhat about the dogs?â Faith asked.
âNone of them fit the profile,â Tom answered. âThey were all big dogs: Dobermans, Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Shepherds⦠none of them smaller than fifty pounds.â
That was a problem because at least two of the dogs for each victim had been smaller than twenty pounds. âNo sign of smaller dogs elsewhere on the property?â Faith asked.
âWeâd need to get warrants if we wanted to search,â Tom replied, âbut three of the five volunteered to let the officers look around, and they didnât see anything. Should we look into the other two?â
Faith considered a moment. âNo, not if they have alibis. If they had smaller dogs, they would have no reason not to tell the officers unless they were the killers. Since they have alibis, I think we can safely rule this out. Besides, I have a feeling that our killer probably hasnât registered his dogs, so the list is probably not as helpful as we hoped it would be.â
âWhat about Franksâ dogs?â Tom asked. âThose were all different sizes, right?â
âYes, but none below fifty pounds.â
Tom sighed. âSo square one then. Dammit.â
They sat in silence for a moment. Faith broke the silence by saying, âWell, if weâre back to square one, then thatâs where we need to start. Letâs break for lunch, and when we get back, weâll go back to the victims. There has to be a connection between them, even if the victims themselves didnât know it. Thereâs a reason the killer chose them, no matter how random it seems.â
âAgreed,â Michael said. âWeâve been focusing on the murder weapon, but that hasnât gotten us anywhere.â
Tom nodded. âAll right. Iâll see you back here in an hour.â
Faith and Michael headed to a local Mexican restaurant that promised Los Angeles-style street tacos. Faith wasn't sure what a Los Angeles-style street taco was, but the spice and citrus of the liberally seasoned tacos cleared her mind and sharpened her senses.
âWell, itâs not L.A.,â Michael said, âbut itâs damned good.â
âWhatâs special about L.A. street tacos?â Faith asked.
âCilantro,â he said. âThatâs the one thing these tacos are missing. âCilantro ties everything together.â
Faith pointed to the door to the kitchen. âYou want to go tell them?â
âYou want to go screw yourself?â he bantered back.
âScrew?â Faith replied with a chuckle. âWhatâs wrong, Michael? Ellie doesnât let you use curse words?â
âShe lets me use them in bed,â he quipped.
This banter was helpful not only to relieve tension but to keep their wits sharp. It was an underrated benefit of a partner who could keep up with Faithâs biting wit.
