CHAPTER TWELVE

Imade the trip home in record time—no animal collisions or road construction. I rewound my gruesome scenario between Tabitha and Isadora, playing the scene again and again. Each time, the possibility became more probability. I’d made a case for both motive and opportunity. Now all I needed was concrete evidence to prove Tabitha had been at the cliff and confronted Isadora. Quint’s voice interrupted my thoughts again. “Yeah, I should admit my scenario is too easy. A neat and tidy package isn’t a good fit. Murder is messy.”

My watch read four o’clock. I hurried inside and headed to the kitchen to help Gladys make dinner. The warm, doughy smell of baked rolls wafted through the air. I sniffed. With a drawn-out moan, I picked up my pace to reach the counter. “I am famished.” Before Gladys could smack my hand away, I grabbed a roll and took a generous bite. “Thank you.” I mumbled the words with a full mouth.

Gladys tied an apron around my waist. “You’re here to help make dinner, remember?” She winked.

“Food is energy.” I patted my stomach. “Now, I’m fueled and ready. How about I make a broccoli cheese casserole while you start the chicken?” I wasn’t exactly Rachel Ray in the kitchen, but my broccoli casserole brought plenty of compliments. I pulled ingredients out of the fridge and cupboard. “Did Nathan give you a hard time about the invitation?”

Gladys clucked her tongue. “That man is stubborn.”

“I’m sure you wore him down. After all, it takes one to know one.” I winked.

“Darn right it does. He caved after five minutes. My argument and persuasive nature are unbeatable.” She coated the chicken pieces in egg and bread crumbs. “He’ll bring his appetite and sit at the table. Guaranteed.”

I skirted around the topic for as long as I could manage, talking about the other guests, the Christmas event, the meager holiday sales, and Ollie’s headache over fixing the snow blower.

Gladys slapped the dishrag against her thigh. “When are you going to tell me about your visit to the resort?”

“I figured I’d wait until you asked because I knew you would.” I tipped my head and pointed a finger at her.

“Smarty.” She tossed the dishrag in the sink then sat in a chair. “Spill.”

I gave her a quick rundown of Tabitha’s agenda and how Stiletto rejected her proposal. “What do you think?”

“Meaning?” Her brow arched like a question mark.

I shoved the casserole in the oven. “Meaning, could that be reason enough to believe Tabitha would commit murder after Isadora threatened to send out scathing comments across social media about the resort?”

Gladys swiped a stray curl from her forehead. “Anything is possible, dear, but is it reasonable to think Tabitha would kill Isadora? I’m not so sure.”

I flopped in a chair next to her and sighed. “Me neither. I’m grasping for any foothold, Gladys. The idea that my cousin would turn so evil and kill his wife?” I shook my head. “I’m struggling with every fiber of my body to accept that.
