Chapter 8
My next errand required a little prep work, part of which I had already taken care of, the rest required the use of a florist. I pulled in to a little shop on Armenia Avenue that I was familiar with, and started out just as my phone announced that I had a text message.
A quick look told me it was from Boyer. I opened it quickly, half-wondering if this was a message I was going to want to read. It was short, almost cryptic. “Oknight. 1:15.”
I knew what it meant, of course. Boyer had opted to scrub his first idea about driving down and had chosen a commuter flight, instead. Ted O’Knight Airport was a small little airfield on Davis Island.
I checked my watch. It didn’t give me much time. It was already creeping up to 10 in the morning, and there were a few things I needed to do that would go much more smoothly if I wasn’t accompanied by someone that just reeked of cop. Boyer was smart to catch a flight rather than drive. It would shave hours off his commute. It also meant that he would be counting on me to do all the driving around.
I’ve said this before: I hate driving. No, scratch that. I hate tapioca pudding. I hate junk mail. Driving? I loathe it. There is a reason I walk or take the bus whenever I can. You know how people are always commenting about how “some people shouldn’t be on the road?” How ya’ doin’. I’m some people. Whenever I get on the road, I automatically become anxious, and it just goes up incrementally as more cars attempt to share the road with me. My knuckles get white on the steering wheel, and I find myself wishing that I had a fully armored tank—not so I’d be safe, but because it would afford me the opportunity to do some serious damage to other cars.
I was quick about getting the small bouquet of roses from the florist, and walked right past my car to the bus stop.
There were two reasons for this. A: There was no way I was going to get through downtown traffic without inflicting damage to myself or some other poor unfortunate driver; and B: I didn’t want to spend a half an hour looking for an open parking spot when the bus would drop me off just a half a block away from where I needed to be.
I took a quick look down at my watch and smiled. The downtown bus was just pulling up, right on time.
I got on and sat toward the front. The bus wasn’t completely crowded at this hour, but there were enough passengers to make it stuffy. That was just fine with me. I’ve long since learned to appreciate the anonymity that a crowd provides. It prevents that one odd little fellow who always wants to chat you up from asking unfortunate questions like, “what are you doing?” or “why are you messing
