CHAPTER 14
Ellie tucked a strand of thin brown hair behind her ears. A sad smile spread across her round face, barely reaching her narrow brown eyes.
Heather studied the womanâs face for a brief moment and a comforting feeling swept across her. Then it instantly evaporated. Judging from the pictures that she had seen online of John Seewald, there was a definite family resemblance.
âHello, Ellie. Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with me,â Heather said. âI hope you donât mind that I asked my friend, Jake, to join us.â
âThatâs all right. Iâm always happy to talk about my brother, and your situation certainly is unique.â
âAre you sure weâve never met?â Heather asked. âYou look familiar.â
Ellie nodded. âIâm positive. My brother and I look alike, so maybe thatâs why.â
âWere the two of you close?â
âWe were very close. I knew a lot of his friends, which is why Iâm surprised we never met. Although, my brother lived away from Des Moines for, let me see⦠probably ten years, before moving back home. Perhaps you knew him from that time. Itâs possible heâs mentioned you, but without knowing your real name, itâs tough to say.â
âI did some research online, and I read that he was a teacher in California during that time.â
Ellie smiled. âHe taught high school literature. He loved it. He used to come back to Des Moines to spend Christmas with me and our parents before they passed. That was how he met his wife, Blair. They started dating long distance, and the following September a position became available at a high school in our hometown. He jumped at the opportunity. We were thrilled that he was moving back home.â
âI saw a picture online of John with Blair and their son, Caleb.â
âCaleb was his pride and joy. Even if robbery were in his nature, he never would have done anything to mess up the life he and Blair had built. I know that a jury found him guilty, but he always maintained his innocence. Some of his friends and I visited him in prison every week, but after a while, I was the only one who went. Once he was convicted, Blair filed for divorce and moved on. I am so angry at her for not believing in him, but I push it down because Iâm Calebâs best connection to his father, and I donât want to do anything to jeopardize that.â
âSo, you believe he was innocent,â Jake said.
âI always have. He didnât know how, but he swore heâd prove it when he got out of jail. He was released two months ago.â
âEllie, did he tell you why he was going to Cape Cod?â
âHe didnât even tell me he was going. I thought it had to be a mistake when the police told me he died in a car accident on Cape Cod. It doesnât make any sense.â
âDo you think we could have been trying to prove his innocence together?â
âPerhaps, but he was convicted in Des Moines. I canât imagine why he would be in Massachusetts.
