CHAPTER SEVEN
After Imogene satisfied herself that Chief Kenny had no immediate plans to arrest Faith Hagen, she and Kat left Faithâs house.
âDo you think Faithâs right about Savannah stealing from her?â Kat asked when they were back on the road.
âShe knew Savannah better than I did, so I have to believe her claim has some merit.â
âLiam sure seemed convinced that Savannah hadnât done anything wrong.â
âYes, well, love can blind people to the obvious.â
Kat supposed that was true. Love could also cause people to take extreme action.
Like kill someone.
âAre you still up for working on those 4F fundraiser mailings?â Imogene asked.
âSure.â
They didnât speak during the rest of the drive. The quiet gave Kat time to cycle through different scenarios to explain the presence of that casino chip near Savannahâs body. Maybe Savannah had dropped it. Maybe her killer had. Maybe that chip had been there for days but the police had only recently discovered it because theyâd had no reason to search the woods before now. Or perhaps someone had left it there to frame Faith or Liam.
There were a lot of options, but not many answers.
Imogene pulled into her garage, and they climbed out of the SUV. Clover was waiting for them inside the house. In fact, the big, white cat was so eager for their arrival he almost got socked in the nose when Imogene opened the door that led from the garage into the kitchen. But Clover didnât seem affected by his near miss with a thick slab of wood. He was too busy craning his neck as he tried to see behind Kat.
âI didnât bring Matty today, if thatâs who youâre looking for,â Kat told Clover. âBut Iâm sure she misses you too. You really got her adrenaline going yesterday.â
Clover wrapped his tail around himself, a prideful glint in his eye.
Kat crouched down and cupped his face between her hands. âWhatâs that look for? You like terrorizing the girls, is that it?â
âGirls, boys, that one there doesnât discriminate,â Imogene said. She pulled a can of cat food out of the cabinet and began dishing the contents into a miniature glass bowl.
Kat watched her for a moment, her brain still churning. âDo you think itâs odd Faith never filed a police report about her stolen items?â she asked. âIf she had Chief Kenny would have known about her missing valuables before today, right?â
Imogene stopped what she was doing. A disgusting blob of gray meat hung from the end of the spoon in her hand, defying gravity as if it were some kind of alien substance.
âI imagine her failure to report the theft was more Liamâs doing than Faithâs,â Imogene said. âHe probably wanted a chance to resolve the situation himself.â
âExcept Liam claims Savannah didnât steal that stuff.â
âEven so, having CHPD show up to interrogate his girlfriend on his motherâs behalf would have put him in an awkward position. Regardless of whether Savannah took those items, itâs obvious she and Faith didnât have the best relationship. And poor Liam was caught in the middle.
