K.C.S.’s early paintings showed faint traces of the influence of Western artists. As time passed, this tendency waned and he evolved a radical, fundamental style of his own, which we can unhesitatingly define as Indian. He travelled abroad many times and always maintained that he became more Indian with every journey that he made to another country. His famous painting, Peacemakers is a work that is a vital turning point in this sense. Buddha, Christ and Gandhi: they form the painting. Universal flames trapped in suffering. Master’s art kept changing. He was sensitive to the passage of time and change for him was not a sudden process but gradual. Despite this, a stream of connectivity flows through all his paintings from the first to the last, distinctively his own.

Although he was born in Tamil Nadu, Master belonged to Veliyangottu in Ponnani and even studied at A.V. High School there for a while. His Malayalam had a Valluvanadan accent, purer than that of many other natives of Ponnani. He was an eloquent speaker, with the capacity to capture any kind of audience. He had an extraordinary sense of humour. He told me of an experience he once had in Kerala, when he was waiting for a train at the railway station in Tirur. An old Muslim gentleman standing near him presumed from his clothes and stance that he was no ordinary person and went up to him. In an attempt to start up a conversation, he asked: ‘Where are you from? What do you do?’

‘I am studying art.’

‘But that’s a subject for little boys to study!’

He completed his college education with a degree from Madras Christian College. He then took up a job in the department of Telephones. As his desire to learn art intensified, he resigned and joined the Madras School of Arts. Chaudhary was then the principal.
