CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

September 17, 2009

New York City

Though he knew Sam had a busy night and wanted to focus on work and getting Nicky's new babysitter settled, Mac pulled out his cell phone and sent him a text. He bit on his lip as he waited for a reply to his I'm in town and meetings went well message, ridiculously anxious to touch base with his guy and make sure he was safe.

Earlier that day Chris had filled them in on the Leviticus case, but it wasn't until Gabi mentioned their friend Logan suspected a connection between the murders in New York and Houston that Mac realized it was the same case Sam was working on.

His Sam.

He didn't question for a second that the guy he couldn't wait to see was in hot pursuit of a serial killer of gay men. Not a chance it wasn't Sam. He'd just been to Houston in connection to a case, and warned him repeatedly to watch his back. Plus Mac had heard him on the phone with his best friend and teammate before they left South Beach. Sam had mentioned M.O., missing person reports, and bodies, and ordered Logan to send some pictures to "Chris" and contact some detective in frigging Houston.

Mac couldn't remember being this scared in his life.

But he was forced to pretend that everything was right in his world. He couldn't ask Chris and Gabi how they knew Logan without letting them know how he knew Sam, and he couldn't let Gabi know he had a male lover before he put an end to his agreement with his family and officially came out. Only a very small group of people knew Mac was gay, and Gabi wasn't part of it.

Incapable of taking another bite, he pushed the food around on his plate and tried to follow the conversation.

He found he didn't give a shit about his friends discussing Julian showing up at the gallery earlier that day and refusing to deal with Gabi. Broadway shows, art exhibitions, photography, or even the opening of their own nightclub didn't interest him, either. Lord help him, but the only thing he cared about at the moment was Sam.

When his phone vibrated, he reached for it immediately and pulled up Sam's message.

So you're all ready to move to NYC now?

Mac clicked on Reply. I'm not quite moving here, so no need to panic.

Who the hell's panicking?

Mac smiled.

Only a few weeks ago Sam would've lost it over Mac's impending and more permanent presence in the city where he lived in. Not anymore. Not because Sam was totally fine with the amount of time Mac would be spending in NYC, but because he'd never admit he was shaking in his boots. Pretending he didn't care about something was more his style, as it allowed him to believe he was in total control.

We met with the contractor and designer, and signed a lease on an apartment. Mac sent the message, then typed another one. Tomorrow I'll get the ball rolling on all the permits and licenses we need.
