* * * * * *

As I walked out of Holmes’ office, I asked myself whether I should go forward with the rest of my plan or not.

While it appeared Aaron Bradley was the person who’d been abusing his position as head of the Procurement division in the DOD’s Acquisitions office, that didn’t necessarily mean Bradley was the person who’d murdered Levi.

However, if I could get my hands on the Procurement division’s employee payroll list, then I felt sure Nina could research the names on there and find out who the ghost employees were, as well as identify the woman who was part of Bradley’s scheme.

Once I had that information, there was a good chance I could use it to determine if Bradley was indeed the shooter.

It was the last point that helped me make my decision, and once I consulted my map of the Pentagon on my cell phone, I headed down the hallway toward 3C440 to put Plan B into motion.

3C440 was Levi Klein’s office.

Since Detective Gaskin let Jackie know the FBI would be coming to search Levi’s office at eleven, I wanted to time my arrival to arrive around ten-forty.

I walked into 3C440 at ten thirty-six.

The reception area in Klein’s office had eight chairs in it, along with a desk where an attractive young woman was seated. A nameplate on her desk said Lola Montgomery.

I presumed she was the receptionist.

There was no one else in the waiting area.

I walked up to the desk as if I was supposed to be there.

“I believe Francine is expecting me,” I said.

She studied me, giving me a beautiful smile as she did so.

Although I never said I was an FBI agent—impersonating a law enforcement officer is a federal offense—I knew I looked the part—dark suit, white shirt, geometric-patterned tie—but I figured it was my authoritarian attitude that persuaded her to pick up her phone.

“Francine,” she said, looking up at me, “one of the guests we’ve been expecting is here a little early. What shall I do?”

Thirty seconds later, a sixtyish-looking woman wearing a pale green business suit opened the door behind the receptionist’s desk.

“Hi, I’m Francine Caldwell.”

“Ms. Caldwell, I’m Mylas Grey.”

“You can call me Francine. Follow me, and I’ll show you to Mr. Klein’s office.”

I was glad she didn’t ask to see any identification.

However, if she had, I would have shown her my Mylas Grey business card, and then we would have had a good laugh about her receptionist thinking I was an FBI agent.

After that, I would have called Jackie and asked her to tell Francine I had permission to collect some of Levi’s personal possessions.

Hopefully, Jackie wouldn’t have been too surprised to hear I was in her husband’s office at the Pentagon, and she would have gone along with my request.

I couldn’t be sure about that, of course, but her response was just one of several uncertainties I projected could happen when I was figuring out how to get into Klein’s office and take a look around.

Being prepared for contingencies was nothing new for me.
