So much of my discussion of the systems that threaten our sisterhood is about making sure that we know the external factors that impact us so that we can be better sisters. Awareness of what influences how we deal with one another is one step toward healing.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like white supremacy and patriarchy are going anywhere anytime soon, but we should want to avoid the trap of the oppressed taking on the traits of the oppressor. We do this by extending compassion to one another, embracing our humanity, and creating spaces where everyone’s needs are met. The place where this compassion and resistance feels most needed is in our thinking and talking about colorism.
