Chapter 17

Daniels waited until Cindy returned home before leaving for the office just hours after the incident at the park. As he walked into city hall, a number of things crossed his mind. They flew past him like the dimly lit hallways of the building where he worked eight hours a day, solving the problems of everyone else’s life and never his own. The selfless act of solving crimes kept him motivated, never stopping to think about his own problems.

Now his problems were those crimes he fought so hard to solve.

He knew the killer was either possessive or worried. His attention had been solely directed toward Clouse until this evening. Did the killer want Daniels away from the case, or was this simply the next step in his intricate plan?

If the killer wanted Daniels away from Clouse’s troubles, he would get his wish, at least on the surface. The detective planned to skim every detail, take every piece of forensic evidence from the bombing case and the murders, and make them his life, even if they went home with him the next few days.

He would take no chances with his family, calling in sick the next few days until the weekend came. At home, however, he would scrutinize every detail in the possibly related cases for personal reasons equaling those of his professional realm.

The strange connection between Tim Niemeyer’s death and the bombing victims puzzled him. Everything about the murder indicated six assailants, five of whom escaped with their lives. In the bombing, there were four victims, just short of five. He found it incredibly difficult to believe the four known professionals might be involved in a stabbing death, but the coincidence felt too strong to ignore.

As he stepped into the office, several afternoon detectives shot strange glares his way. He ignored them, walking straight to his desk and picking up the files before heading toward the copy machine. Taking case files home was against standard operating procedure and many ethical codes of conduct. Daniels, however, would bend the stated rules by taking only copies of certain documents.

Midway through the stack of selected documents one of the detectives came to the door, startling Daniels. He felt certain he was about to be accused of stealing documents, or worse, but the man simply handed him a slip of paper.

“This came in a couple hours ago,” the older detective explained. “Guy called about meeting you at his residence to collect his belongings.”

Daniels saw the name Russ Hinds scribbled on the piece of paper with a phone number.

“Did he say when he would be there?”

“Don’t think he said. Just said he wanted you there when he collected his stuff.”

“Thanks,” Daniels said before returning to his copies. He worried Hinds would try entering his residence alone. By no means a small man, Hinds was capable of defending himself, but the killer was crafty and versatile enough to kill with any given number of methods.
