Chapter Twenty-Three

"Man, am I glad we installed that safe room," Gaucho said as he walked into the kitchen following the scent of sizzling bacon. "It doubles nicely as a jail cell. I'd go nuts if I had to watch that guy day and night."

Top was at his customary spot, making eggs to order, and doing final prep on his mama's famous biscuits. His Johnson & Wales education was put to good use for the men of the Jefferson Group.

He brushed the tops of the biscuits with a wash of cream and black pepper. "What are you babbling about now, boy?"

"I was just saying that I hate watching prisoners. It's either boring as hell, or you got to stop a guy from slitting his wrists or trying to choke himself with his own tongue.”

"Lester give you any trouble?"

"No, he's been pretty good. Said he wants to talk to a lawyer."

Top snorted. "I'll see if I can get one out of the yellow pages."

"Yeah, but man, what are we going to do with him? We're not built for this. We’ve got to give him to someone at some point, right?"

"Gaucho, my friend, why don't we think about it, as you regale your belly with the power of Mama's biscuits and a heaping helping with my famous scrambled eggs?"

"You better put some bacon on there, too.”

“Don't you worry. I made a new friend with a farmer out in Albemarle County. Check these babies out." He held up a piece of bacon that must have been half-inch thick. "Maplewood smoked."

Gaucho's mouth watered. "Alright. Give it to me."

When Gaucho was halfway through his food, and watching their prisoner between bites on the small, baby monitor-type screen, Cal and Daniel walked in.

Gaucho made a sound like a trumpet. "Hear ye, hear ye. The Marines have arrived."

Daniel surprised him by giving him a half-bow.

"Looks like Snake Eyes woke up on his right side of the bed today. You, on the other hand, Cal, look like you could use a GI shower."

"Yeah," Cal said, running a hand over his face. "I didn’t get much sleep last night."

"Trouble in paradise?"

Cal gave him a look as if to say, "Please don't ask."

"Well," said Gaucho, shoveling a forkful of eggs into his mouth, "our friend in the basement has eaten his protein shake breakfast. He's gone to the lavatory and is now playing the role of perfect brig bunny. Speaking of which, you have any idea what we're going to do with that guy?"

Cal shook his head, then walked over to the coffeepot and poured himself a steaming mug of gourmet Kona blend. "I just got off the phone with Brandon. He's going to have someone at the FBI look into the Fowler thing. And no, I have no idea what we're going to do with Lester."

"Lester," said Top, peeling open a steaming biscuit. "I mean, who names their child Lester? I thought that name went out of fashion back in the 50s."

"It's probably a family name," Gaucho suggested.

"I thought rich daddies gave their baby boys names like Thurston or Richmond.
