Odilia was pleased with what she saw. The reflection in her mirror was exactly what she had intended it to be an hour before when she had set out to create it, demure yet inviting. To that end, she had swept her auburn hair above her tiny ears and had donned a gray suit, modestly cut, undecorated save for a small jeweled pin in the shape of a sea horse worn over her left breast. Spike-heeled pumps gave her added height and, she believed, a certain regal bearing.

She hoped that Jack Cox would find her appearance exciting. Men generally—and particularly those not gentlemen born—derived a perverse satisfaction that went beyond mere lust in possessing a woman who also appeared to be a lady. It fed their egos as well as their appetites. Virgins were prized for the same reason. And while Cox could scarcely be expected to consider her the latter, there was no reason that he might not be convinced that she was, regardless, still the former.

Odilia had spent the day doing what was, for her, a great deal of thinking. The notion conceived at their first meeting, that Cox might prove to be the instrument that would restore her to her former privileged position, had become an obsession with her. In the two days since their parting, she had waited hopefully for him to return. He had not done so, nor had he sent any message which would indicate he remembered her as anything except a convenient bed partner. She could feel opportunity slipping through her fingers until, this evening, she had decided to seize the initiative. If Cox was too engrossed with his assignment to think of her, then he needed to be reminded of what he was missing.

That she faced competition in the person of Dorlisa Weber simply didn’t occur to Odilia. If it had, she would have laughed at the idea. Who should know better than she what kind of woman a man like Cox preferred?

Earlier, when she had made her decision, she had instructed Domingo the boatswain to have the launch ready to take her ashore. When she went on deck, carrying her overnight case, she thought she spied him lounging at the gangway. As she approached, she discovered it was Gayoso instead.

“Good evening, my dear,” he greeted her. “Going for a little stroll?”

It had been her intention to slip away from the yacht without informing the General. But his presence, as well as his faintly mocking tone, told her that he was already aware of her plans. She said defiantly, “I’m going ashore for a little while.”

“A little while,” he repeated, surveying the overnight case. “Of course. You’re taking a few things to be laundered.”

As always, she was no match for him at repartée. “Think what you like,” she muttered.

“Thank you. Well, if laundry is not the reason, what can it be? Perhaps you’re tired of shipboard life and yearn to stretch your legs. Or perhaps this is a shopping expedition to buy souvenirs of Tijuana for your family.
