Chapter
Eleven
Six-thirty came fast and hard, with a headache and barking dogs where my dance feet had been. I didnât wear heels often anymore, and my feet werenât used to the pain they caused.
I forced myself out of bed, quietly, so I wouldnât wake Shane. I wasnât sure what time he had come in. I had been asleep.
Despite my best efforts, the slight creak of the wardrobe door woke Shane as efficiently as an alarm clock. If only he woke that easily for work.
He rose up slightly on one elbow and glare-squinted at me. âCanât you keep it down?â
âGood morning and happy anniversary to you, too!â I took off my penguin pajamas as I spokeâ Shane would have to wait for the sexy lingerie I packed. I knew I was being passive aggressive, so I stopped myself. âThis is our anniversary trip, Shane, and youâve done nothing but ditch me and complain. Iâm not asking you to join me today, frankly, because I donât want your bad attitude to ruin my fun. But I expect you to be well-rested and ready to spend some time together when I get back.â
Shane opened his mouth and then closed it again. He mumbled something and rolled over to face the wall. I was disappointed, but I didnât have time to coddle him this morning.
After a quick shower, I hurried to dress and comb through my wet hair, feeling like I was late, even though we couldnât disembark until seven. But Edie, Kevin, and I needed to go over all we knew and all we didnât know.
When I made it to our agreed-upon spot, I immediately felt frumpy, and not for the first time on this trip. Maybe I should invest some of my casino winnings in a new wardrobe when I got home.
Kevin was wearing what I thought of as frat fashionâa button-down shirt, untucked, and salmon-colored chino shorts. He also had his massive camera hanging around his neck. He and Edie were ready to document the day in ultra high definition, by the looks of things.
Edie was decked out in a flowing white blouse and colorful sarong over her bathing suitâ ready for any kind of action, and all I had to set my jeans and T-shirt outfit apart was the necklace Iâd bought myself for our anniversary. It was a brilliantly polished ammonite shell shaped into an elephant, my favorite animal.
âOoh, elephants, they never forget. Unlike me,â Edie said, reapplying a beautiful coral lip stain to her already perfect look. âYou kids ready to crack this thing wide open?â
âI donât know if Iâm a kid, but Iâve got my game face on. Kevin, how are you this morning? Did you stay out late?â
âDid he hook up with that pretty croupier, do you mean?â Edie asked.
âNo. To both of you.â Kevinâs look told me it was not the first time his grandmother had asked him such a question. âI went to bed at the same time as you. Alone, unlike someone else.â
Now it was Edieâs turn to blush.
