Their slapstick progress – though it cannot have seemed funny at the time – continued, the Sumatran coast being reached on the evening of the 18th. With only a small school atlas they sailed southwards along the coast, making for the Indragiri. Several sailing and motor boats had been encountered, as well as Jap aircraft and at nightfall they anchored near a large junk full of soldiers (probably the Hiap Hin). Oppenheim again:

Set sail in the early hours. Very slow progress. At 10.30 a motor boat comes alongside and the General and his party jump on board and leave us without a word of thanks, but they do leave $100 towards the expenses of the twakow. Everyone cheers up after their departure.… After a lot of arguing with Hay I persuade them to take on board a Malay pilot.… This was lucky otherwise we would never have found the Indragiri which flows for several miles at right angles to the sea and hence the mouth is hard to see. The Malay pilot took us straight to it and we anchored there for the night.*
