DING-DONG, THE BITCH WAS BACK!

“Ugh!” Cat gagged at her first taste of the virgin margarita Zuri had just brewed for her. “This tastes like soap.”

“It tastes great to me.” Lori took a healthy sip of her drink while sending an apologetic look Zuri’s way.

“It tastes like garbage. Utter garbage.” Sneering, Cat held her glass out to Zuri. “Make me another one.”

Zuri grabbed the glass, and for a second- just a second- she was tempted to toss its contents at Cat’s perfectly made-up face.

The witch had arrived at the Cross Estate just after lunch, and she’d made every second of the last four hours hell for Zuri. She kept on demanding drinks and snacks that she only tasted once before discarding them as awful. Worse, she kept on making rude comments about the home’s staff right in their faces.

Cat told Beth that she was getting fatter and needed to go on a diet. She scolded Finn for not giving her car a full detail when he’d only wiped it down out of courtesy (cleaning guests’ vehicles wasn’t even part of his job). She went in on the temporary cleaning staff when one of them moved her pumps so they could clean the foyer. And for her favorite target, Zuri, she had lots to say.

Why wasn’t Zuri wearing a uniform?

The dress she had on was too cheap and made the Cross family look bad.

Why was Zuri wearing a headscarf today? Oh, it was because she had her natural hair out and was afraid some hairs would drop into the food? Well, she should just consider shaving her head then. Given her humongous head, bald wouldn’t look good on her (according to Cat), but it would certainly be better than her weird, woolly hair.

Lori loyally defended Zuri and the rest of her staff, but she was no match for Cat’s razor-sharp tongue. No one was. All they could do was pray that she leave soon.

“Do you think I’d get fired if I hit her with a pan?” Beth asked when Zuri walked into the kitchen with Cat’s glass.

Zuri laughed. “I think Lori would understand. The government though…”

“Ah, the government.” Beth groaned. “I’m too pretty for prison.”

“Yes, you are, girl.” Zuri began to prepare ingredients for the new margarita. “Do we still have laxatives in the first-aid box?”

“Uh-huh. We do.” Beth’s twinkling eyes narrowed. “Where is this going?”

Zuri waggled her eyebrows. “Should I add some?”

Beth gasped. “Girl!”

Zuri laughed. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding.”

“No, no, no. You have the right idea there. Do it,” Beth egged her on. “Do it! Do it!”

Zuri was tempted… very tempted. But professional pride kept her from actually going through with it. Once the new (and very safe) margarita was ready, she carefully set it on a tray then headed back to the living room. Just as she got to the foyer, the front door opened, and Tanner walked into the house.

As soon as Zuri saw him, her pulse began to race. Heat rushed through her body and her cells awakened with excitement.
