With the top of her motherâs silver Audi convertible down and the sun shining on her face, Jaiden zipped in and out of traffic as she sped down the freeway, trying to guess what her fatherâs surprise might be. He had good taste, always bought the best, and had never bought her anything that she didnât immediately love. Whatever it was, Jaiden knew it had to be classy, special, and of course, expensive.
She glanced up into her rearview mirror and caught her reflection, satisfied with her new ultra-short, spiked brown hair, now streaked with blonde highlights. She had lacquered it with hairspray so that the wind would not muss it up, once she decided to take her momâs jazzy new car, which she was seldom permitted to drive. But what the heck? She was stuck in Houston, and her mom was cruising around somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, having a blastâwhy not take advantage?
Thin gold hoop earrings swayed against Jaidenâs honey-tan cheeks and her bronze-tinted sunglasses with 14 carat gold rims made her eyes look as if they had been sprinkled with flecks of gold. Momentarily taking her eyes off the road, she lifted the sleeve of her white tee shirt and checked her new tattooââRod, Foreverâ encircled by tiny chain links on her upper right arm. It was perfectly drawn, but still very fresh, and hurt terribly. She had gone into the city yesterday, found a tattoo parlor on Montrose Boulevard that seemed clean and safe, and told the artist what she wanted. An hour later she had walked out with Rodâs name inscribed on her arm. He was going to love it, she decided, reaching over to press the volume button on the CD player, sending Erykah Baduâs smooth voice out into the wind.
Jaiden missed Rod terribly. Since New Yearâs Eve, they had become more like a real couple, and they spent most of their free time together. Rod had not told her that he loved her yet, and had made it clear that, though he liked having her around, he did not want her to move in with him. Occasionally, she spent the night, but still kept her clothes and personal things at her dorm, respecting his desire to protect his space. She never dropped by uninvited or asked him where he was going or what time he would return. She had learned that asking too many questions made him distant and moody. However, little by little, Jaiden was making progress. If only she had been able to go to Florida with him. That would have been the bomb!
Her thoughts returned to her dad, and despite the gloomy picture she had painted for him ⦠mainly to make him feel sorry for her, being in Houston in April was not so bad. At least the weather was great, not yet stiflingly humid as it was going to be very soon, leaving her feeling as if she had been wrapped in a heavy blanket and rolled out to sea.
