Chapter
Seventeen
Iwas standing at the edge of the harbour, watching the last ferry disappear into the misty horizon. The wind howled around me, whipping my jacket and sending spray from the choppy waves across my face. Dark, ominous clouds loomed overhead, seeming to press down on the island like a suffocating blanket.
Hannah and I had decided to come back into town, power up our phones again to use them against the cult. Make them believe they had us where they wanted us â while Megan was working on tracking down possible places where the cult could keep Ludvik hidden from the safety of our headquarters on the coast.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, squinting against the rain to read the screen. It was a severe weather alert, warning of an impending storm set to hit Verveld Island. Great. Just what we needed on top of everything else.
Thunder rumbled in the distance, a low, menacing growl that seemed to shake the very ground beneath my feet. I pocketed my phone and turned to head back into town, already thinking of the preparations we would need to make. We couldnât afford any distractions from our search for Ludvik, but we couldnât ignore the threat of a major storm either.
As I started up the steep path leading away from the harbour, I caught sight of movement. I stopped, my senses suddenly on high alert. Several hooded figures were slipping into the shadows of nearby alleyways, moving with a purposeful stealth that set my teeth on edge.
My heart rate picked up, adrenaline flooding my system. Could it be that they were hiding in plain sight? That they had been in town all along?
I pressed myself against the rough stone wall of a nearby building, trying to blend into the deepening gloom. The wind carried snatches of hushed conversation, too faint for me to make out the words, but the tone was unmistakably urgent.
I needed to get back to Hannah and the others, to warn them. But I couldnât shake the feeling that if I moved now, I would lose a vital opportunity to gather information.
I raced through Verveld's narrow streets, my feet pounding against the wet cobblestones. The wind howled around me, carrying stinging rain that pelted my face and obscured my vision.
âStorm's coming! Secure everything!â I shouted, bursting into Gwen's bakery. The old woman's eyes widened as she took in my drenched appearance.
âThis bad, Cole?â
âWorse. Get to the town hall.â
I didn't wait for a response, already dashing to the next shop. My warnings echoed through the town, mixing with the increasing roar of the wind. People scrambled to board up windows and bring in anything not nailed down.
The sky darkened to an unnatural, sickly green. Lightning forked across the clouds, followed by a bone-rattling crack of thunder that shook the very foundations of the buildings around me.
I'd never seen anything like this on Verveld. The island had weathered its fair share of gales, but this⦠this was something else entirely. The air felt charged, almost alive with malevolent energy.
