One day in 1982, while I was appearing at a sportsman’s show in New York State, a man came up to me with a tube and, with some pause, asked me if I wouldn’t mind looking at a bamboo rod that he had made. He took it out of the bag slowly, clearly hesitant to show me his work. What I saw was a Garrison-like rod that could have only come from the pages of our book. I almost hugged that poor fellow, and although it was decidedly a first effort, he had made it himself by studying the book. How often does an author get to witness a man holding out something that means the world to him and that is a direct link to work that you put in years earlier? I have seen many rods since then that have as their genesis “The Guide,” but I will never forget that first one. Knowing that the book has contributed, and made people think and use their head and hands, remains gratifying to this day.
