CHAPTER 8

Things were looking for bad for Enrique, and they went from bad to worse very quickly, especially when the missing skate was found in the garbage disposal. Not only did the blade match the wound on Lily’s head, but her blood was on the blade too.

“I didn’t do this!” Enrique cried as the guardians cuffed him and led him away. “She was my best friend, my best friend!”

Shortly after that I sat down with Randolph and Rachel. The elder rivals of Lily and Enrique were both shocked and distraught to learn of Lily’s passing.

“I can’t understand why he’d do something like that?” Rachel said, her eyes narrow and disbelieving. “Her own partner? To kill her in cold blood?”

Randolph, sitting next to his sister, stared into the distance. I cleared my throat to press the next matter. There would be no easy way to have this conversation. “I’m afraid there are some personal things we will have to delve into. Two personal items were found in Lily’s dressing room and I have reason to believe they refer to each of you.”

Both Randolph and Rachel shifted defensively. “Whatever do you mean?” Rachel asked coldly.

“There were red sequins on the carpet, and I can only assume they came from one of your costumes. No one else in the competition wears red. Which one of you were in there?” I asked.

They both looked at one another. There was mutual confusion at first, then I noticed an edge to the way Rachel glared at her brother. “Neither of us would have gone in there,” Randolph said. “It’s considered bad luck to venture into a rival’s dressing room. We take the competition very seriously, and we wouldn’t want to risk something like that over luck.”

Rachel nodded in agreement but turned to her brother. “Did you go in there? You sick son of a—”

“Hold on a second,” I said, putting my hands up in the air to still the mood. “Let’s keep this civil.”

“Civil?” Rachel scoffed. “Tell that to the one who can’t keep it in his pants.”

Randolph rolled his eyes. “Darn it Rachel, you’re my sister, not my mother. I’m a single man, I’m free to do what I want.”

“This is about the relationship with Lily?” I asked. “Your sequins were in the dressing room because you went to see her there?”

“No,” he reaffirmed. “Going into a rival’s dressing room is bad luck, I’m not going to mess around with that and jeopardize our chances at winning the competition. Our relationship existed purely in hotel rooms, and it fizzled out several weeks ago anyway.” He stared at his sister. “No doubt thanks to your meddling.”

I turned my attention to Rachel. “What’s this?”

Rachel was now the one to roll her eyes. “Oh, he’s just sulking because I told him to end his little tryst. He didn’t listen, but she listened. Am I the only one that can see how stupid it is to fraternize with the enemy? She was using you, Randolph.”

The body language between the siblings was cold, and they were turned away from one another.
