CHAPTER ELEVEN

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Wednesday afternoon, after completing all three of my morning tours, I sat at my desk and let out a contented sigh as I pulled off my boots. I was free for the next few hours, so I pulled up The Park's web page to read and reply to questions left overnight. Most of them were requests for business hours and prices, which were clearly stated on the site itself. Every once in a while, I'd get an unusual message. After finishing a reply to a customer's inquiry about our food services, I got a notification for a new incoming post. This newest one was from someone with the username Merinite who lived in New Mexico and wanted to know if we allowed after-hours investigation tours. I didn't know what she meant, and since we were both online, I started chatting with her.

Hi, I'm Lily, the park's manager and happy to be of help if I can. I typed. But I'm not sure what an after-hours investigation tour refers to.

It took a few moments for her to reply. I watched the notification stream start and stop as the person thought out what to say. After a few moments, the message appeared.

Hi, thanks for chatting with me. Some locations, including ghost towns, allow small groups of professionals, semiprofessionals, and sometimes amateurs to come in and use paranormal equipment after hours to try to talk to the dead.

Oh, I see. The idea of people using machines to "find" spirits reminded me of a television show I'd once watched. Sorry, but we don't have any after-hours investigation times as of now. No one has ever requested one before.

Would the Calico Rock Mine and Ghost Town be willing to let us come in and investigate? We're open to discussing accessible times and proper procedures with the owners.

I doubted that the board members would accept this entreaty, but it wasn't my place to say, so I responded, This is the first time we've had such a request, and I'll have to run it by the committee.

Thanks, please let me know what you find out. From the sound of it, she was tenacious if not a bit assuming.

I will, I replied. And you're welcome.

I ended the chat and, while the request was fresh in my mind, typed an email to Steve about the subject. Not long after I had finished the memo and sent it off, a knock sounded at my office door.

"Come in," I called out, filled with curiosity. Very few people other than my family ever got past the receptionist's desk without Gretchen buzzing me, so it did not surprise me when Ava entered the room.

"Hey," I greeted her with a thumbs-up and nodded for her to have a seat. "What brings you by?"

"I'm hungry." She sat down, stretched out her legs, placed her hands on her lap, and sighed. "Have you eaten yet?"

My sister looked and sounded tired, but it was no surprise since we'd stayed up pretty late last night discussing the case.
