“I don’t want them to just look out the window and see us,” Tell said. “They are going to know that we were at the center. I left a claw sitting on her bag. Why would I do that, if not to follow her here?”

“You gave up the element of surprise,” Tina said slowly.

“But I did it very quickly,” Tell agreed.

“I see.”

He turned two corners away from the factory and pulled into a daytime-attended lot and shut the engine off.

“They know who I am,” he said. “They know who you are. They know that I’m coming.”

“Tell,” Tina said. “You can’t do this.”

“I have to,” he said. “If we let them go, they’ll just disappear and turn up somewhere else. Should have done it already, if they knew who they were dealing with, but they thought they could bully you into making me quit. Trying to keep their good thing going here.”

“She’s…” Tina said after a moment. “She went running to them. They’re making her turn in her own people, and she knows about Kaija, but she still went running to them when she knew that you knew about her.”

Tell sighed.

“She’s picked a side. We don’t know how many years she’s been doing this. At some point, it stopped being coerced and just started to be normal. I’ll deal with her later, or I’ll let the fae deal with her, but you can’t be shocked about it.”

“Watch me,” Tina said. “So this is the point where you need to have had a plan, and you didn’t.”

“Moment of opportunity,” Tell admitted. “The thought that someone would be using Eldest Kaufmann’s work to figure out who was worth keeping and who most deserved to be held captive and then fed to a Kaija? It’s the same reason you didn’t go to Fiji with Hunter. We have to get this done, because it can’t go on.”

“I’m afraid,” Tina said. “I’m afraid that they’re going to kill you.”

“I’m pretty hard to kill,” Tell said. “Especially as much time as I’ve been spending around you lately. You haven’t made it into the office for a while.”

“You could, like, keep a house-human around or something,” Tina said. “If it makes that much of a difference to you. I’ve known college kids who would pay to sit in your library and play video games all night every night.”

“You know it isn’t just proximity, right?” Tell asked, and Tina shook her head.

“No. I don’t know that.”

He grinned out at the parking lot in front of them.

“Well, it isn’t like I’ve had someone explain it to me, but it’s more than just you being around. More time is better, but it’s not the only thing that’s important. Anyway, I’m not afraid of them killing me. I’m afraid of them getting loose and starting again somewhere else.”

“And the trained army of Kaija? The list of possible magic potions? Special vampire-killing weapons?”

Tell stretched his mouth to the side, then nodded.

“Yup. I’m going in.”

“The hell, dude?” Tina said. “What are you talking about?”

He opened the door.
