“Take Ocean Parkway to Avenue I, take I to East Twenty-fourth, and turn left.”

Bishop pulled over to the curb in front of the house. Brooklyn College was directly ahead of us.

“What now?” I asked.

Bishop began hitting his car horn repeatedly.

A light on the front porch came on.

A man walked out of the house and started moving toward the vehicle.

“Well?” I asked.

“That’s him, no question.”

A quick movement from Bishop caught my eye, and suddenly there was a gun in his hand. He raised his arm.

I looked from the weapon up to his face.

“It’s not the way it looks,” he said.

And then the lights went out.
