THIRTEEN
Kevin Crosby wasnât at school on Monday or Tuesday, which meant that he wasnât at practice on Tuesday, either.
So Kevin was the one guy on their team who didnât get to see the new attitude Jake brought with him to practice Tuesday night. Didnât see Jake trying to keep a smile on his face practically the whole time, even when it started to rain and he ended up doing a couple of headers into the mud.
If Quinn wanted to see fun from him, then okay, Jake was going to give him fun.
He was the one who went chasing after balls that went flying off the field and into the trees, he was the one acting like a cheerleader when he wasnât on the field for one of the three-on-two drills, he was the one patting guys on the back when they started scrimmaging and every time somebody would make a good pass or play or stop.
It was during a water break near the end of practice when Quinn came up behind him, put a hand on his shoulder, and said in a quiet voice, âDude, youâve got to dial it down a little.â
Jake said, âIâm trying to set an example.â
âAs what, a golden retriever?â
âYou told me to have fun.â
âNo offense, but try having a little less.â
Jake kept hustling to the end, threw himself around so much that Reid McDonoughâwho lived to throw himself aroundâhad to remind him at one point that they were playing soccer, not rugby.
When Coach finally told them he was calling it a night and that heâd see them Thursday, he jogged over to where Jake was collecting up the orange cones on the other side of the field.
âWhat got into you tonight?â Coach Lord said, and Jake said, âJust soccer.â
